Broken Leg

Lily Blossom broke her leg ?. I took her to the vet and she had a break and a dislocation. She is in a small temporary cage right now and has on a splint. I’ve never had anything like this happen to her and she is my first rabbit, I need some advice for keeping her happy. She seems super sad all the time unless she’s eating veggies or for some reason her meds which she enjoys. She is eating even though less hay than normal (she came back from the vet midday yesterday) If you have had any problems like this before can you please give me some advice, the vet just told me general and that chews are a good toy (I asked about toys) Advice from anyone will help from people with any alike experiences too, disabled, fixed, or broken bones

I’m so very sorry she broke her leg. I don’t have any experience, but we do have members that have, I don’t know if any one of them are currently active though.

Chews would be really good. Rabbits often enjoy gnawing bark off twigs, so if you can get hold of twigs from f ex apple trees or willow (make sure no pesticides have been used on the apple trees, willow is as a rule never treated with pesticides), that’d be great.

Give her a lot of attention – if she wants it. F ex if she enjoys being pet. Even if it means you’ll have to sit in an awkward position to reach into the cage. Getting pet releases the “happy”-signal-substance oxytocin. Even if you don’t actively interact with her, she will like company, so try to be in the room where her cage is kept – rabbits are very social and like to have their humans around them.

Thank you so much, I’ve been giving her a lot of attention recently and unlike before she seems to enjoy it, she is also in my room so I can give her a lot of attention both with petting and her meds/diet

her leg got twisted in the leash after seeing something outside since I was told to bring her to the back yard.

She will most likely have to get her leg amputated luckily she’s at such a young age that she will be able to learn how to use it again and not lay down the rest of her life.

Its good to keep her in your room while she recovers as u will b able to observe hermire often and easier, and will b able to hive her more attention. I have a disabled rabbit. Aside from meds/vet care, watch her food and water intake and poops/pee as u may need to syringe feed her. If she stops eating hay, u will b syringe feeding her critical care. Keep her warm, and in a small space. Keep her litter box extra clean. Use a low profile bix. You could get a large plastic tub and cut a side down so she doesnt have to hop. U could get her a stuffie for extra comfort while u r not there. My disabled bunny who has a bonded pal, loves his stuffy. When he is doing poorly, i bring him and his stuffy into my room. He was never interested in a stuffy untill he became ill.

Thanks everyone, she’s doing really great right now. I was grooming her to calm her down since there is a thunderstorm right now ? Since the cast is off I couldn’t really see which leg was which so I accidentally went pretty near the broken one (with a kids hairbrush so it’s pretty soft) and she flinched. She has finally started eating hay normally and even though she always leaves a little bit she’s eating most of her pellets and she’s eating her veggies and treats like nothing ever happened even though she never really had a problem with putting food in her body when she got hurt, as long as it tasted good. I remember the first thing I did once I was in the car taking her to the vet (well except cry) was try to give her some carrot which she ate.

You honestly can barely tell her leg is broken. It faces a little outwards compared to the other but you really need to look to notice. Her toes are kind of pushed back but if I pick up her mid body just a little that gets fixed. She keeps waking me up in the middle of the night halfway standing up trying to get out of the box, she is cleaning herself fine. And for tricks she will sometimes not do a spin but she definitely won’t to up (normally she would do it as soon as she sees a carrot but now she just puts her head up super high) she also will throw ANYTHING I put in her cage from her hidey house which I’ve removed because of flipping over and excessive space consumption (I covered a spot instead) and I’m making sure to place the litter box perfectly so she won’t move it more than like 6 inches.
Her toys I expect her to throw but throwing a litter box or hides house almost sounds more interesting most of the time. She still pays some attention to them though, I woke up today to a moved litter box filled with bunny toys ?

THat sounds fantastic 🙂 Glad to hear! One of my bunnies used to throw her litterbox. I suspected she was frustrated at the small sixe of her enclosure. Once she was in alarger space, she settled down. Lily might be frustrated at her immobility? But it sounds like you are doing a good job. How long is she on cage rest? I would keep her space limited for 4 weeks, enlarge it a little for the next 4 weeks, and then re-evaluate. Did yoru vet give you any guidance on that? Fantastic to hear she is doing well.

Really wonderful news!!! Thank you for the update! You are quite obviously a great bunny mom. Lily sounds like she has a bit of bunnitude – that’s good, breaking her bone didn’t break her spirit. We’ll love further updates, of course =)
