BOTH Bunnies Being Sedated at One Visit!??

Hi Everyone,

I’m extremely nervous- tomorrow I’m bringing both my bunnies to a new vet to be sedated and given dental exams,molar spurs filings,and blood work. I’ve heard great things about this vet- Dr Ogden in Southborough, MA. But I’m going to have to leave them there for a few hours I guess, and I’m just a wreck! I know this needs be done- they are both 6 years old, and Nelli had visible molar spurs at her visit to her regular vet two months ago, and this past week I’ve noticed that she’s not eating her hay like she usually does,. And Bun seems to have a hormonal imbalance, which I shared on another thread, plus his teeth looked a bit crooked. 

I guess I just wanted to vent.. maybe I’ll feel calmer now that I wrote this. Of course, any reassuring comments wouldn’t hurt either l !

Vibes for your 2 Dee. I know it’s stressful but they will be fine – I’ve put many a bunny through dental exams and sedation and all came out just fine :~)

I can’t wait to get Nelli’s chompers fixed- I feel really badly for her. She’s always been a great hay eater, more so than Bun, so it’s sad to see her unable to chew anything but little wisps of hay.

This does prove to me that yearly checkups are necessary for rabbits. I was always on the fence about them before, because my bunnies are just terrified of the car and hate being handled (except for pets and massages!). But if I hadn’t brought them in due to Bun’s odd, overly manly behavior, I never would’ve know about Nelli’s emerging molar spurs.

Sorry I didnt update yesterday- although there is nothing to update because I deciided to go to my regular vet and cancel the Wednesday appt. I had a busy day yesterday with work and didn’t like the thought of leaving the buns after then being sedated, even though hubby would watch them. Then my regular vets secretary called back and said that he does do molar spurs and they had an appt for today. She said to call this morning for a same day appt get Bun seen with Nelli. So I was under impression that they would both be sedated, Nell would get her molars done and Bun would get a thorough mouth check and bloodwork done.
I call this morning and I guess this is just a consult . He wants to be sure that the teeth are the reason for Nell only eating soft foods. Then,if he decided that’s it, we have to book an appt on a surgery day to have the spurs done. I’m afraid that Nelli will go into stasis waiting for all this! She’s eating soft food- greens, pellets mushed up in water with Critical Care, and any fruit she can get off course. But only little bits of soft hay, although last night she seemed more interested in hay and ate several soft blades of hay in front of me.
The girl on the phone said they don’t do molar filing , “floating” she said, often because most bunnies don’t need it (!?). I questioned whether I would be better at an exotic specialist if my vet doesn’t do these often and she said that my vet does the procedure and is comfortable with it.
I really like my vet, he takes lots of time with my rabbits and gave them the most thorough exam Id ever seen. I wouldn’t know about Nellis teeth if it wasn’t for him. But I’m wondering if I should’ve just taken them the other vet, because they would be done by now!
Any thoughts? For those with molar spurs bunnies, how long do they go eating only soft foods normally, without issues? Nelli isn’t prone to stasis,only gas, but I’m nervous. Thanks for any advice!

Hi Dee, when would his surgery day be, do you know?

As far as floating/filing – it’s really the same thing but just a different terminology as long as the molars get filed down that’s the important thing.

She’s eating and that’s good – I think as long as she keeps eating anything it would be fine.

Maybe she’d like some hay chaff if she’s looking for extra fibre?

Sometimes you can get small bags in feed stores. But you’ll find similar at bottom of your hay bag or bale. The finer stuff falls right to the bottom.

I put it in bowls for my rabbits now & then and they’re pretty keen on it.
