Book Recommendations

 So I recently got back into reading for fun (both fiction and non fiction). Would just like to see what books others recomend to read or avoid. Plus what are you reading right now?

I just started Watership Down (yea I’m late to the party) and I have feeling it’s going to end up like Grapes of Wrath but with rabbits lol. If anyone is into nerdy 80’s culture/video game humor I suggest Ready Player One. It’s a fun and quick read.

I love the Kinsey Milhone Mysteries – Sue Grafton and Dr. Alex Delaware novels by Jonathan Kellerman. Also Elizabeth George and PD James. Also Donna Leon.

I like historical novels too by Alison Weir and Phillipa Gregory and Jean Plaidy. Those are mostly set in Tudor England.

But there are lots more I love as well.

I am starting “The Swan Thieves” by Elizabeth Kostova – loved her novel “The Historian”.

I’m a huge book nerd but I’m pretty biased because I mostly only read historical fiction. My fave is royalty like Tudors, Mary Queen of Scots, Queen Juana of Spain, etc. I also really love Philippa Gregory and Alison Weir. Carolly Erickson is a great historical fiction author too. Barbara Erskine does great fiction too.

If you like animal books, James Herriott books are great (semi-autobiographical books about a 1940’s British country vet.) Very entertaining and heart-warming.

If you like fantasy the Game of Thrones books are awesome. I’ve read 3 so far.

Wish I could read for fun. Watership Down is a very wonderful story though. Glad you finally get to read it. =)

I’ve been interested in getting into historical fiction but the first book I could get was The Accursed. Ugh, it was a tedious read and it was just plain crazy. Will look into the authors that everyone has mentioned ^__^ Yay for libraries!

I am on a real Young Adult kick lately…which is weird for me. I usually like classics (especially ones about animals), fantasy, and children’s novels. The Mortal Instruments and Infernal Devices series by Cassandra Clare are suprisingly good (the movie does not do them justice and a lot of the plot was rewritten). I also just got my boxed set of Bunnicula so I am excited to start that!

Bambi
The Inkheart Trilogy (great for book nerds that like fantasy. They are classed as children’s books but I don’t agree…some very mature themes in them.)
Anything Tolkien
The Gemma Doyle Trilogy by Libba Bray
Those Who Hunt the Night by Brabara Hambly (vampire mystery set in Edwardian era. No sparkly vampires here!)
The Darwath Trilogy by Barbara Hambly

The Life of Pi is a fantastic book – anyone who loves animals should read it Also The Book Thief is one of the most touching books I have read, quite a lengthy novel and set in Nazi Germany it is so interesting and gives an amazing take on life through the eyes of ‘death’ – the narrator

@Valkyrie: Oh man, Black Beauty. I was REALLY into horse novels as a child. Especially ones written by Marguerite Henry because they had several pages of beautiful color illustrations. King of the Wind was my favorite~

I just finished The Boy in The Suitcase. It was a pretty good read – but will now have to review the list above for my next book. I hate no having at least 2 books in my queue to read 🙂

LittlePuffyTail – Did you know there is a TV series based on James Herriott’s books? It’s British and was done in the 1970’s, I’d guess. It’s on Netflix streaming. A little dated and cheesy, but entertaining enough. I love all things British, so I liked the scenery and lifestyle portrayed. It’s called All Creatures Great and Small.

I’ve just finished listening to The Last Lion, a 3 part biography of Winston Churchill. It is incredibly long but so, so good. It does a wonderful job of describing the time period and the events of Churchill’s life. I had no idea he was such a major player in British politics pretty much his entire life. I honestly could not stop listening to it at times. (I’ve become very into audio books. Perfect for all the walking I do in the city and for hanging out with the bunnies.)

I also like the Flavia de Luce series. It’s a fun mystery series told from the perspective of an 11 year old girl. Also British.

justwildbeat: Can’t forget the Black Stallion novels! I also read Heartland, which helped me heal from the loss of my grandfather. I love Marguerite Henry! <3 It always bothered me that none of my friends knew who she was (I was born 40 years after Misty was written and my friends read more recent books). It is funny that you bring her up because I am still on top of the world because 2 weeks ago I managed to find the Breyer model horse set of Misty and Stormy with the 60th anniversary edition of Misty of Chincoteague. I have wanted it since I was a kid but nowhere sold Breyer near me.

Dobby- Yes, I love that show!!!! I was watching it every day when it was on Netflix and then they took it off (Netflix Canada). I was so disappointed. I loved it because I’m also a big fan of everything British! Such a feel good show. Looked into buying the box sets but they are really expensive.

I loved Marguerite Henry books as a kid. My fave is “Justin Morgan had a Horse” since my horse is a Morgan.
