Bloat – Hospitalized

I haven’t been around the forums in a while. Busy with work and my boy has been doing so well!

Until this morning. Everything started out fine. He ate and played and then suddenly he was acting strangely and looked like he couldn’t poop – straining and lying down in the little box. Refusing to eat hay. He always eats hay. And laying out a lot in a spot he does not lay down in and shaking like he was hot, but it was not hot in the room. I have a temperature gauge. I suspected a blockage. 

Luckily I have a wonderful rabbit savvy vet and took him straight there and they told me that he has bloat and his temp was low. They warmed him up and are giving him fluids and meds for pain, but they can’t “run a tube” to help remove the bloat due to its location, I guess. They told me that this wasn’t the worst they’d seen, but that this could be his “demise.”

They are keeping him for a few days, and I know he is safe there, but I am terrified. My poor baby!

I don’t know why I’m posting other than I’m hoping for reassurance that everything will be ok – even though I know you can’t know that for sure. 

I am happy I recognized the signs and brought him in right away. Its our first medical emergency. Ugh I feel terrible

You poor thing, it’s horribly stressful when stuff like this happens, but youve done everything you can to help him so do take comfort in that and hopefully he’ll be okay

Sounds like he’s in the best situation he could be in – you caught it very early, and he’s getting treatment at a knowledgeable vet hospital. That increases the chance of survival for this type of issue greatly. Hope he gets better soon!

I’m so sorry this has happened to Jack, but you did react quickly and got him care. Bloat certainly is a serious condition, but he seems to be in the best possible hands ATM. ((((Jack))))

You know Jack best and reacted immediately. It sounds like he’s in the capable hands of people who care, and while I agree that the wait is horrible, try to stay focused on sending him positive vibes. We’ll do the same. (((((((((bunbun Jack)))))))))

So I have a small update. His temp is up and he had a bunch of fecals this morning, but they were small. Its great news that he’s improving!

They still have him all drugged up so he’s a bit lethargic, but the funniest part is that they have a big orange sticker on his cage stating “CAUTION” because he keeps trying to escape the cage and the exam table when they are syringe feeding him and giving him meds. They have to give him everything on the floor because he’s so flighty!

Its good news to me because at least he’s still fighting. He’s always done everything on his own terms, so despite the medication he’s still himself. They let me bring the hay he likes and his little stuffed bunny to keep him company which is was snuggling with when I left.

They said they are keeping him today and we will see tomorrow. They may want to hold onto him until Saturday to be safe. I really miss him, but he’s my strong boy.

He’s home! I actually brought him home Friday night. It’s been very tense around here. I am watching him like a hawk and really struggling to give him his meds.

I was able to hide the metacam in a piece of banana, and eventually figured out that reglan hides in watermelon well, but I hate I’m giving him so much sugar with the medicine. He just won’t take the syringe and I don’t want to force him and stress him needlessly.

Today (Sunday morning) he seems ok. Poops are almost back to their normal size, but I just wish there were a little more. I am hand feeding him hay all the time as I know that is best for him. He eats it in his own too, I just want him to eat more. I am barely giving him greens compared to what he used to get. Right now he is getting them for the water content more than anything else.

I just feel so stressed and worried this will happen again. I am working on that, but for now I am just so happy my boy is home.
