        Hello,

I recently brought home a baby mini rex and I already have 2 trained lovebirds living at home.  My one lovebird seems more curious of the bunny and has tried making friends (preening the bun).  The other is unamused lol.  Bunny seems to be fine and will sniff them and sometimes hop after them to give chase.  Just curious if anyone else has had birds and bunnies together.  I watch them very carefully and don’t allow them together for any extended periods of time.  Mainly just curious if anyone else has any experience with this.  I love my birds and wouldn’t want to risk harm to them or the bunny.

Ok – first of all – that is just the CUTEST Photo!!

I do not have birds – but would LOVE to get a Conure one day! So I’m posting to help boost your post in case someone else can help as I’m curious too!

My best suggestion is that, like with all mixes of pet combos, a lot of it will come down to the temperament of the animals in the home.
          Congrats on the new addition!!!

Thank you!  This was actually a snap of a little video I took of them checking each other out. lol.  My one lovebird seems to want to play with the bunny.  He was even inside his tunnel last night.  He has tried preening him also and giving him little nibbles (he does the same to me so I don’t think this is in any way an aggressive behavior).  The other lovebird isn’t as impressed (he is the baby lovebird) and has tried little pecks, but last night he did land on the bunny’s back and sat there for maybe 6 seconds before flying off.  I have my lovebirds trained and spoiled so they are not scared of much and are allowed out of the cage frequently.  The bunny seems to have the same demeanor.  He lets me pet him and doesn’t really seem to mind the birds being around-he seems more curious than anything.  I just closely monitor them.  I also had read to be careful not to allow the bunny to ingest any bird seeds, etc. so I keep him away from their cage and I vacuum frequently.  I was more concerned about the bunny hurting the birds because they are so delicate.  They don’t know the are tiny–they think they are giants. lol

              Awww! So cute!
And yes, bird seeds can be bad and also fattening for bunnies

I would also watch for changes in your bunnies behavior to them when she starts getting her hormones (mine was at about 4 months old) as they can get territorial – females worse then males.

Obviously I would keep it to 100% supervised time – like you have been – but I’m sure someone on here has both types of pets and can offer more advise!

Will keep an eye on him.  I read that when hormones kick in they can become little terrors. I just have to give them my full attention.  I swear I turn my back for one moment and the bird flies right into the bun’s playpen.  I was rather surprised that the birds weren’t more shy, but they seem to welcome him for the most part.  The birds are more picky about people. lol

hahahah I find most animals are more picky about people lol.
But yes, some bunnies (more so females) can be little territorial terrors…. Although my boy – Rupert was the one who did more of the territory pooping… BUT I’m not sure how much of that is against other rabbits vs other things.

Neither had any problem with me reaching in their cages to clean and move stuff when they were in it… but were just territory making when they can sense the other rabbit.
BUT I’ve heard of other peoples rabbits being territorial with the human and their cage when they are in it.

So again, just depends on the animals lol

                    Thank you.

And agree-depends on the animal. I guess I will find out once he gets a little older.
