Bilbo was neutured today. The op went really well but tonight he started going for his stitch so had to take him back to the vet to have a collar put on him. He absolutely hates it and can’t clean himself or anything. I really hate seeing him in this way, it’s breaking my heart. The vet said he will have to keep it on for 10 days – is he really ok to not clean himself for that long? I can’t really take it on and off myself because I’m on my own and getting the collar on is a 2 man job. He will only eat little bits from out of my hand. I hate him having the collar on, and don’t want to go to sleep tonight.

Glad he’s home and surgery went well!! ((Healing vibes)).

I would leave the collar on as your vet instructed. It’s only once in their life that this happens and he will forgive you. If he opens sutures you’ll really have issues so just make sure he’s eating and drinking and pooping and peeing; and know he’ll adjust and forgive you

Poor baby! Glad to hear that the surgery went well, though. I think 10 days is reasonable for healing, and it’s better for him in the long run no matter how upset he might be for now. Is he unable to eat by himself with the collar on?

Poor little guy. I can relate, my first bunny had to wear a cone for over a week after his neuter. It’s very sad and you feel just awful but when it’s over he will forgive you. Bindi had to wear a cone in September and that was just awful too. They just seem so depressed wearing that thing but bunnies can be very adaptable. Just keep telling yourself “It will be off soon”.

Thanks for the replies. As I’m not working at the moment the vet said that as long as I’m watching him and don’t let him lick himself down there then he can have his collar off! It instantly cheered me up so he’s been happier today and has managed to eat by himself and have a drink. He needs to drink more though, he’s not had that much. He’s been cleaning all over literally for about 4 hours and I’ve had my hand over his no-go area so he can’t muck up the stitch. It’s so cute though because he just licks my hand instead as if it’s the intended body part to lick hahaha. I’m a much happier Mummy today
