Best Pain Medication for SPAY?

I’m wondering what pain meds are the best for a spay?  Getting our second one spayed hopefully this week.  

What do you think about Metacam?  I just saw a website http://www.metacamkills.com and am now severely traumatized seeing the photo of the kitty with an IV drip.  OMFG.

My first bunn had such problems with the “feline liquid torb pain package” the vet gave him for his neuter.  It didn’t seem to help him any with his pain.  Neuters are undoubtedly painful, I’m sure, but the thought of a bunny hysterectomy with total removal of a uterus and ovaries gives me pains in mine.  

I promised myself I would never adopt out of a shelter but again, our second bunn was in a situation that was about to shuttle her towards a shelter anyways, so I brought her home.  

What pain meds worked for your female bunn?  Or how did the pain med your bunn(s) got work?  

I read an article last year that gave precise recommendations on what pain meds are best for bunny’s spay/neuter needs but am unable to find it!!

I’m pretty sure Metacam is what my rabbit had after his ear surgery and other problems. I don’t think he’s ever had the torb.
I’m curious why you’re against adopting from a shelter. But that’s beside the point.

My girl had metacam (many years ago) after her spay. That’s the standard that is given as far as I’m aware. Have you discussed your concerns with your vet?

They usually use a different pain medication for the actual procedure – it’s always injectible.

Metacam is common for rabbits for after care pain and I’ve never had a problem with it.

You really should consult with the vet on what pain meds they prescribe during the procedure and after and talk of your concerns with the vet.

My girl was given her pain meds by the vet for the surgery and a shot that lasted 24 hours afterwards, not sure what the name of that one was. And he also gave us oral metacam to bring home once that shot wore off.

My rabbits, except for one, have been given Metacam after a spay or neuter. They were spayed or neutered at a vet’s office. The other rabbit, who was spayed at a shelter after we adopted her, was given Butorphanol. The medicines seemed to work equally well to me, and all of my rabbits bounced back quickly.

I always thought Metacam was the standard go-to pain medication. That’s what mine got. I suppose there are others, but I’m thinking that Metacam is relatively inexpensive and plentiful so that may be why its so popular.

Vet refused to give her Metacam, this was from the vets office who run the Orange County Humane Society in Huntington Beach. Don’t know why they couldn’t fill my request (but FYI for those googling for info, this is a great office to take your bunn where they routinely do surgery every day on shelter animals and paying clients except Sundays…I would’ve loved to take her to THE bunny vet in Irvine but her for a lot of profit office quoted more than double, $300-350, for mandatory concierge type services like IV fluids, etc.).

Her doc didn’t make me buy more liquid Torb, I had the vial from my first bunn in the fridge from about 10 months ago…just in case of an emergency. He said torb doesn’t go bad, just have to increase the dose. We got the surgery done on Thursday morning and I’m sooo happy to say that she’s doing very well or acting like it on the liquid torb. Too bad it wasn’t the torb + valium concoction but she’s not a very skittish bunn.

Megabunny: I’m not against shelters, meant to say “I promised myself I would never adopt OUTSIDE of a shelter.” As it goes: DON’T BREED OR BUY WHILE SHELTER ANIMALS DIE.

I had my bunny spayed at a Humane Society low cost drive. They didn’t give us any take home medicine. She was eating and lounging by that evening and it was a struggle keeping her still because she was so active so soon after surgery. She showed no signs of pain and bounced back immediately. I’m not sure what they gave her, but they said they already gave her something for pain and they don’t send meds home. They said the most important part was making sure she ate and pooped. If we had any problems we’d need to see our vet. Which was worrisome, since they only do spays on Fridays and our vet isn’t open on the weekends.
