Ever since I got Sheldon, I’ve been trying to give him the best of everything. Such as him being house indoors, him having a good variety of veggies, toys etc. When I try and explain these things to people, such as why rabbits should have toys, or have lots of green veggies, they tend to laugh at me, and take it as a joke. I tell them that lots of carrots and fruits are bad: “Oh but that’s what my friends rabbit gets, its fine for them.” This really frustrates me.
Basically it comes back to them saying: “It’s just a rabbit.”
I worked in rabbit rescue for a long time and heard these things but I always felt those people felt that way about ANY animal so I just let it roll of my back and that is what you should do. I just realized that I did not need to engage them about rabbits and rabbit care if they didn’t care because it was a waste of my time and my emotions.
On the other hand I got alot of positive feedback and those are the people I would engage with.
Yes, exact same thing happens to me.. Especially when I tell them that Beans has such a cheeky personality. Everyone just kind of laughs at me in a way to say, ‘rabbits don’t have personalities’.. If only they knew.
I should let them see Muffin when I’m trying to get him back in his cage after play time. Or let them try, THEN they will know Rabbits can be the cheekiest creatures on the planet.
I know someone who has a Rabbit and they still think they don’t have personalities.
You just have to laugh back at them, at how blind and ignorant they are.
Spoil a dog or cat and its normal. Spoil a rabbit, and you get “It’s only a rabbit!” Just because they are smaller, doesn’t mean our love for them is any smaller!!!!!
My best advice is: just ignore those people and keep making your rabbit happy. ![]()
Thanks everyone ![]()
Valisa, I agree with what everyone has said, though I think Sarita and Little Puffy Tale summed up my personal point of view the best. An instructor I had many years ago put it best of all (in my opinion ), the subject under discussion was dogs, and whether or not I should look into getting a specific type of dog, and when going over my qualifications he said “there are some people I wouldn’t trust to look after a plant.” I’ve run across many people I feel fall into that category over the years. I’m profoundly greatful when they Don’t have an animal in their care, And leave the rest to laugh on their own, … they don’t know what they are missing and obviously aren’t open to enjoying the possibilities a loving furry creature can bring into their lives.
Do you live in a farming area?
I live in the suburbs.
I had a talk with my mum, and explained this to her. She was apologetic for what she said. She didn’t mean to be like that. I think my whole family will come around about the whole house rabbit thing. They will learn new information about rabbits and I’m sure they’ll end up falling on love with the little guy.
People are often idiots about rabbits. I never-mind them. The other day I met a woman while I was picking green leaves etc for Bam and Yohio, and when I explained that I’ve two found rabbits at home, she pitied me for having to have two rabbits indoors, Can’t you fix them a cage or sth so they can live outside at least?
Yeah, right. As if I’d want my darling boys to live outside. As if I just put up with them, not love them.
I always feel a bit sorry for people who can’t appreciate the marvellousness of animals as companions. But so many of those people can’t just be un-appreciative of pets, they have to be hateful of and/or derogatory about them as well. That sucks.

Well said. I as well pity those who have never experienced the unconditional love you get from an animal friend.
bam 😮 I wouldn’t put my two outside for anything, they are too cute running around, flopping on A/C vents to get the cool air, jumping in the bed to say hello and doing binky zoom races all around my room. Why on earth would anyone want to put something that adorable outside so they can’t see it? ![]()
Don’t let their comments get to you. A lot of people are ignorant about rabbits as house pets since they’re not as common as dog and cats.
However once you own one you’re hooked! My mom never wanted a furry pet. Once we got our first rabbit. She went above and beyond to give our bun the best food, cage, toys possible. Our bun even had free range of the entire house (2 floors) and back yard. It helped that she had excellent litter habits too lol.
Gosh people laugh at me all the time! I got a weird look when I said I insure and vaccinate my rabbits… Yeah basic care for a rabbit isn’t common knowledge all the time!
Who cares what these people think anyway! Keeping my bunnies happy keeps me happy so I just let them go straight over my head
I was telling a friend about Ox and just how much care they actually require. As I was telling her this she gave me the weirdest look and said that someone she knew fed their rabbit jello and cheetos and that the rabbit was fine on this diet since that’s what it had been fed for three years.
Rabbits, while quite a popular pet, tend to be one of the most neglected.

Wow…..
You could feed a child jello for years as well and he would be “fine”, if by fine you mean not dropping dead on the spot. ![]()
The only ignorant comment we ever got was after we had to put our poor bun down, Hubby’s coworker said “Well, they’re only good for eating anyway.” Yeah, thanks, that definitely made us feel much better.
How rude of the coworker! ![]()
I would have given that co-worker the FUB! (Foot Up Butt) That is terrible Hazel!
I recognize that people do eat them, and it used to be the most efficient way of getting meat, but to say it TO SOMEONE WHO IS GRIEVING THE LOSS OF THEIR PET??!!!!
It’s just inhuman!
I knew quite little of rabbits before I did research in order to get my parents to let me buy one, they are much more than ‘a mouse and a house’ (sorry, an expression me and my mom use to describe pets that need a good environment and food, like goldfish and mice, with little interaction.)
Thanks guys. He’s an old man, I guess he grew up thinking of rabbits as livestock. Still, he should have had enough sense not to say a thing like that.
