I’m just wondering if anyone else has had problems with these bowls? (Inserting the ones that I got off the internet.) I got one for Thumper almost 3 years ago and it has dark grey spots all over and it started to chip in two places; Not to mention Thumper was able to move it and flipped it upside down a few times.

        Here’s what Thumper’s looked like.

I don’t have that specific bowl, but it looks like it’s time to upgrade! Bowls that constantly have water are going to eventually grow some things, stain, and crack if they are not robust, so I would recommend getting something new to prevent any water contamination.

I have one, but I don’t use it as a water bowl. I use it as a salad bowl. Bamboo plastic is somewhat porous, so I agree with Wick that what you’re seeing is probably from water standing in it.

We also had a bamboo bowl set, but they became difficult to clean. The surface soaked up moisture and got a bit bubbly, that collected dirt in small pockets. I ended up tossing them because of hygiene reasons.

Bamboo may be less ideal as a green material than we suspected, because bamboo plastics are often a mixture of bamboo, plastics and synthetic resins. Our European consumer authority has put out a warning that putting warm liquids in bamboo crockery makes it release toxins like formaldehyde and melamin: https://www.foodpackagingforum.org/news/bfr-statement-on-bamboo-cups-and-tableware
