Just started clicker training with our bunny girls, though the foster family we got them from did some as well. I made up a couple of target sticks with ping-pong balls on bamboo skewers, which were working great until I set one of them down on the ground while getting a treat out, and miss Rosie grabbed it and ran off into the back of the pen to chew on the skewer. she chewed through the stick a few inches down, then worried at it a bit more, before I got it back. When I pulled out the second target stick later the same day, she was going for the bamboo and trying to pull it away or chew through it while I was holding it, but I didn’t let go.
I’m going to switch out the skewers for thicker dowels in my target sticks… if nothing else it’s a big training distraction when one of the buns is always plotting on how she can get the stick away from me. But it made me wonder, since Rosie is so very enamored of the bamboo skewers… are they an OK thing to use in making bunny toys? Could I stick some things on a skewer and let her have it to chew at as she wishes? Or does bamboo have too long of fibers to be safe for bunny digestive systems (or some other reason to not be toy-safe)?
