Arrrh okay guys so a few days ago I noticed that something was a bit iffy about Buttercup’s fur. There was a little patch of fur about the size of a 50p coin where the fur wasn’t as…fluffy looking and it looked a little flat? I couldn’t work out why. Then today I saw what the problem is … it’s actually thinning again! I can see part of her skin now Her original bald patch has grown in so well with no issues so this is a little suprising! It’s within the original bald patch. I’ve no idea what could cause this unless it’s mites again. She’s not itching or grooming excessively. Any thoughts? If it is mites, do you think she just needs regular preventative treatment?

I had a bunny once who groomed strange/scratched strange causing a raw patch. I bet that’s it, sometimes it was a bit dry and others it wasn’t. It would come and go but never stay too long. Never itched it more than a regular bunny does, not groomed it. I guess she had a weak spot in the fur or something? Well anyway I think she’s ok!

No experience with mites, but maybe not all were eliminated and it took them awhile to come back? A common story for rabbit illnesses far and wide…

I did wonder but could it have really taken over 2 months for them to come back? She had the original mites treatment on the 16th Aug.

Totally possible. Reinfestation also likely since hays (even commercial) can carry mites… so monthly treatment might be advisable.

I spoke to the vet and he said as we are seeing him again on the 17th (2nd lot of jabs) he’ll take a look at her then to save us stressing her out one more time. Her little bald patch is definitely growing, she’d just got all her fluff back from the last time and now it’s going again ?

I’m hoping it is just mites and nothing serious. I’ll probably treat Peanut again too just to be safe. If I do monthly treatments, do you think I should do so for Peanut as well?

Wick secretly passes his ringworm via the forums to Buttercup.

                    Best wishes for a conclusion!

                      Wick! ?

Sarah: With buddy buns, I would treat both for anything shareable.

Two months would be rather typical if it’s mites. The first round of treatment doesn’t eradicate all mites in all the stages of develpment. You should do repeat treatment after about a month to kill off any mites that may have hatched since the first round of treatment. These mites of course need a little time to multiply and cause a new bald spot.

Bam had fur mites when I first got him. I did repeat treatment after sth like 3 weeks (long time ago so don’t remember exactly). Then we never saw any signs of mites again for the rest of his life.

But as Q8 says, mites can come in with hay so re-infestation is always a possibility. I’d ask vet for treatment for Peanut too because your little ones are so closely bonded. Peanut might have more resistance to mites, but I’m pretty sure he carries them if she does, and could transfer them back to Buttercup as soon as her treatment is over.

Thanks guys, I’ll defo get both treated. I’m a bit disappointed because when they had their first mites treatment in Aug, I did ask whether a repeat treatment would be needed but the vet said no. I’ll insist on it this time tho and see what he thinks about routine treatments. Thankfully it’s vet time tomorrow!

Also I don’t know whether it’s just how her fur is laying but for the last week I actually haven’t been able to see her skin at all within the patch like I did when I made this thread? The fur is definitely shorter and thinner though.
