Bald bump on hind leg

Hello!! First time posting here, I usually run to this page whenever I encounter an issue with my bunnies. I was trimming my bunny’s nails and I noticed a reddish/yellowish(?) bald spot on his hind leg. Not quite sure what it is but from what I read, it may be an abscess. Does anyone else have an input before I take my bunny to the vet? The bump seems to be hard. I gently touched it and my little Tux did not flinch. ?

Im thinking an abscess also. They do feel like firm lumps, not mobile, like you might expect for abscesses. In rabbits, the pus is very thick and encapsulated. The body starts to build cartilage around it as a way to wall it off.

Is he in with other rabbits? Im wondering if he got a bite at some point or if a bond mate has been overgrooming the area at all. Where on the leg is this? It almost appears like top of the hip.

Yes.. looks like an abscess to me, too. She could have nicked it somehow. I had a bunny who developed a lump on her lower neck and it was hard as stone. The vet (not a rabbit specialist) said it could be a tumor, because he injected it to see if it would draw any pus and nothing came out. Ha, well, rabbit pus is very thick like toothpaste which I didn’t know at the time!

The next day, the hard lump had a soft spot and within the next few hours it burst and I had to rush her to the vet to have it drained. It was icky. A week’s treatment, draining, antibiotics, cleaning, and she was fine. There was a hole left from where the abscess was (like a pocket) but that gradually shrunk and healed up.

The bump is in the inner side of his hind leg, towards their “ankle” area.

I’m thinking it’s an abscess as well. I do have another bunny. Is overgrooming a possibility? Would you guys recommend saving a trip to the vet and do home remedies?

What home remedies would you guys recommend for an abscess? I did read that they have a high rate of reoccurring.

The problem with bunny abscesses is that you can’t simply “pop” them. As the others said, the pus is very thick. A vet typically has to cut it open and scoop out the pus in order to clean it properly. Then antibiotics will be needed.
