Pacey and Marshmallow were both at the vet! Ok Marshmallow was only there to get her nails clipped and her teeth checked out.
Pacey is there from a litter box accident yes that is right a litter box accident. I cleaned their boxes this morning and I usually attach them to the side of the cage but apparently I didn’t today. I filled their hay boxes up and attach those on the edge of the litter box.
I was in the kitchen washing dishes around 10 am and I hear a terrible screaming and knew it was one of the bunnies. So I go in there and Marshmallow is going insane on her side of the room thumping and slamming into her cage. I couldn’t see Pacey so I thought he was hiding until he screamed again and I noticed the litterbox at a weird angle.
Tried to put it right side up and he screamed again. So I picked him and litterbox all up He had chewed a slit of some sort and proceeded to get his front paw (the cute little white one) wedged in this slit and tried to hop away turning it completely backwards! ![]()
Me being a panicky bunny momma freaked out but was calm enough to clip the litterbox away from his paw. Put him in his carrier and off to the vet we went. The whole way there he was making this like whimpering sound when he would try to move. And every time he did Marshmallow would thump and slam into her carrier door. So I put them facing one another and she was calm and was grooming his ears through the bars.
At the vet the paw was no longer in the wrong position but swollen huge! He wouldn’t stop grooming it but if you touch it he would get very still and either scream or whimper.
After lots and lots and LOTS of x rays the vet determined he has only a pulled muscle. I was extremely relieved that it was only a muscle and not a broken bone. So he was given some pain meds and has to be restricted until it heals. He is hopping ok but holds the one paw up. It’s so pitiful looking!
But now everytime I go to pet him Marshmallow growls at me! ![]()
Oh no! Poor Pacey… get better soon bunbun! Sounds like Marshmallow is doing a good job protecting him as he recovers ![]()
Oh wow, Marshmallow was so smart to alert you to this! I wonder what is going on in her head…she obviously was concerned about him. She is obviously being his little security guard and is taking care of him in her own way. Hearing a bunny scream is so sad – I’m glad you were home too. Healing vibes for little Pacey and calming vibes for you and Ms. Marshmallow.
Wow, it’s been a bad few days for the bunnies on this forum. I hope he heas quick!
(((Pacey))) Poor Bub! Pain med is good. Lucky he didn’t cut anything open I guess, but must be uncomfortable for him.
Sounds like Marshmallow is very protective of her little buddy!
I’m so glad it wasn’t a broken bone! I hope he heals up quickly.
Silly buns will find all sorts of new ways to hurt themselves.
Thanks everyone… Right now he is snoozing in my lap flopped over but he is holding his paw up in the air even while sleeping it is so sad to see! If I had any clue where my camera was I would put a pic up his little paw is like 2x the size of the other ones.
OMG, poor Pacey! ((((((((((mega get better vibes!)))))))))) What a harrowing experience for all of you! I would’ve been a complete wreck!
Have to admit though, the paw up pic would be adorable in a ‘poor bunny’ sort of way. ^_^
This reminds me of when my hub’s cat got bitten in the paw and he had to wear this gauze ‘cast’ for a week or so while it healed. We’d taken to calling him ‘clubfoot’ by the time his paw had shrunk enough for it to come off. He’d been flicking his foot in an attempt to groom himself and the gauze went flying and smacked into the bedroom wall with a loud thump. ^_^ He was sure glad to have that off, because he would ‘run’ at his food/water dishes and it always made them tip over on top of him.
Anyway, good girl Marshmallow for sounding the alarm! How precious that she seems to protective of Pacey! Are they bonded? It sounds like they could be, if not. ![]()
Aww poor Pacey!! Here are some healing vibes for him!!!!
What a good girl Marshmallow was! MM, I was wondering too if they were bonded, sounds like they get along well enough, and in a crisis like that, that’s adorable that Marshmallow was grooming him through the bars.
No they aren’t bonded yet since if there is not a barrier between them within 15 minutes fur starts flying. It is one of the big reasons I got Marshmallow spayed so I could attempt to rebond them. They were bonded for a little while then Marshmallow had a major issue with Pacey being anywhere near her.
Pacey is her baby right now. Awe she has sympathy for buns in pain and in need. Smart girl. Wow who would have thought that a bun would do this. The things they do poor Pacey.
Pacey has a special place in my heart. Cant tell you why guess I like little buns.
Oh Pacey get well soon young bunny. Hang in there. Chill out relax and stay that way for a week or so. Heal up first Pacey.
When a person pulls a muscle heat can help relax it. Also moving around loosens it up some . Then when you are still for a while it freezes up again and hurts til you loosen it up . Since the vet didn’t mention this I would follow what he said and keep Pacey from running and hopping about til it heals. Animals hide pain well and if she starts running and hopping she could hurt it again.
Then again you aren’t stupid and would know this. lol. glad Pacey got pain meds. Without that he could go into shock and stop eating. Glad you were home too. That Pacey.
The vet actually suggested I put heat on it which he enjoys thoroughly. He is looking a lot better today he paw looks normal. He likes all the attention that he is getting from everyone lol.
I have basically kept him with me the entire time I went into work with Pacey in tow which everyone loved I don’t really know people at work since I work from home 99% of the time but he was loving it.
He still doesn’t put weight on it which is expected. Marshmallow is like his giant bodyguard lol. I went to feed him and she took a fit when I picked him up it was really weird since the only animals I have seen this from are my dogs.
(((Healing vibes)))) for Pacey! Glad to hear he is feeling better and the swelling is going down! Poor little guy! Marshmallow has to protect her boy from the hoomans!![]()
I am so glad everyone is ok!!!
*breathes* wow i felt freaked out just reading your description… that must have been awful! poor pacey bun! good thing he has his marshmallow bodyguard ![]()
I have never heard a rabbit scream and I hope that I never do! Poor Pacey- healing vibes to the sweet little guy!
Thanks everyone. He is doing much better today he is attempting to put some weight on it but won’t put much on it. He being the spoiled butt that he is much prefers flopping over in my lap before walking around lol
Marshmallow has finally calmed down and lets touch him before thumping at me. But she doesn’t mind if I have a piece of raisin in my hand much more cooperative then lol
