Hi I’m new here. I have a 6 year old Dutch rabbit. Recently he had an eye infection due to over grown teeth which were grinded down under anesthetic which went well. Today he is finding it hard to open his right eye and he is tilting his head slightly to the right. He has an appointment with the vet tomorrow but I have no idea what I should do until then. I’ve cleaned his eye with water (boiled first) and I have given him some pain relief. Is there anything else I can do to make him more comfortable? He’s eating, drinking and pooping normally. I hate seeing him in pain. Any advice would be appreciated

Providing he’s eating, drinking and pooping, there’s really not much you can do. Tilts are often related to ear infection or E.c. but there’s really nothing you can do for it without getting medication from a vet.

Thank you for a response. The head tilt is weird. He can walk/run with his head straight but tilts it when he lays down. At first he was just keeping his eye closed then when he laid down he tilted his head. Hopefully we have caught what’s wrong with him early. I’m going to leave him out of his cage tonight and stay up with him to make sure he doesn’t get any worse. The vet appointment is early morning so fingers crossed it’s nothing to serious.

I know it is heartbreaking to watch. I have had bunnies who had headtilt due to an ear infection and others due to E.C.. There are some treatments for it, but it can take a while. If you are worried about injury – from falling over, then you can line his cage with soft bedding – fleece, towels etc (provided he is not a chewer/consumer of cloth)

Let us know how the vet visit goes.

              Sending healing vibes!

Some very good news. Last night Thumper started to open his eye and his head tilt wasn’t as bad as it was. This morning he was even better and the head tilt was gone. We still took him to the vet and turns out his eye had been scratched slightly and the reason for him tilting his head is because he was in pain on his right side of his face due to his eye. I am so relieved it was nothing serious. I just have to wait for him to forgive me for taking him to the vet which will take most the day lol Thank you for your replies, much appreciated
