        Hi guys!

So, I’ve decided to get another rabbit (I used to have a few in my childhood), and I wanted to ask for help. So, I’ll be getting my little bun when she’s three months old, and so far she’s just on a diet of hay and maybe pellets too, I’m not 100% sure. The thing is, when I went to the pet store near me I couldn’t find any alfalfa hay, only timothy. Is it okay if I feed her timothy hay, and then additionally use junior pellets? Will that make up for the lack of proteins in timothy hay?

        Thanks in advance!

Hi, one of my rabbits is 4 months old and I have just been feeding her on Timothy hay as I too couldn’t find any alfalfa hay. I have heard that it’s ok to just feed timothy but hopefully someone who knows for sure will come along here and tell us

Can either of you get ahold of alfalfa pellets? If you’re in North America, Oxbow sells the best brand (in many people’s opinions) of such, available in most major petstores (Petsmart, Petco and Pet Supplies Plus all carry Oxbow products, and alfalfa hay as well). Small Pet Select is even more highly regarded by many house-rabbit people, though it’s US-only, as far as I know, and carries both hay and pellets.

In any case, you should offer unlimited alfalfa to your bunnies for the next few months – I think six months old is the most usual figure cited – and then begin transitioning to timothy hay (75-80% or more of daily diet), greens and a small daily amount of timothy pellets (1/8 to 1/4 cup for each 5 pounds of adult rabbit weight, according to the instructions on Oxbow packages).

Thanks for replying. I live in the UK but I’ll have a look on the Internet and see if I can find some alfalfa-based pellets.

I just found that the junior Supreme Science Selective pellets have alfalfa as the first ingredient. It can be bought in PetsAtHome so I’ll have a look tomorrow. Thanks for suggesting alfalfa based pellets

Just came on this on Google, it looks like Oxbow does sell in the UK so this should work for you:
