Our mum bunny gave birth  (this was a suprise) to 7 babies on 2/18/2008, 6 surived.  Currently they are 4 weeks old.   Today I noticed that one of them had (a lot)  poop stuck to theiri bottom.  I cleaned it off by wetting a paper towel with warm water and I had to cut some of the hair around the bottom becasue it was stuck most was still squishy.  I checked the others and they have traces of the poop on their fur (not a lot).  I also noticed some one left some very soft stool on a piece of card board.

Right now they have access to pellets, alpha, hay and water all the time.  Mum is still nursing maybe once a day that I have seen her.  Is this ok?  Is this the transition of being weened, do I need to do some else

Hmm yelpot I am not sure, but I do know that if it were diarrhea, it would be serious and needs the attention of a vet.

Could it be possible that one of the babies hadn’t eaten his morning cecetropes (sp?)…
When I got Kibou, she was just over 5 weeks old and for a few mornings she had quite soft stools…I don’t think she was eating her cecetropes…as it stopped after a few days. Just keep a close eye and if it keeps up I would definitely get to the vet.

I agree with Scarlet Rose – it really is best to get them to a vet, since diarrhea in baby rabbits can be very serious.  it can be indicative of a bacteria or dehydration – another major cause is being weaned too early, which it doesn’t sound like is the case.

do you have a rabbit savvy vet?

here’s an article with a bit more information

Do you know if mom was ever tested for coccidia?  It is pretty common in rabbits, and can cause the runny poops in babies who get it from mom.  Your vet may ask for a stool sample to perform a float test for parasites.  Keep us updated please!  My litter of three foster babies went through a bout with poopy butt when they were about 6 weeks.  There are many changes that go on inside the gut of a rabbit between 1 month and 2 months of age, and the overproduction of cecals can result.  Coccidia is dangerous to babies, please get it checked out.
