Avocado

This morning when I made some toast with avocado, a small bit of the mashed avocado (literally the size of 1/2 of my pinky nail) fell on the floor and Benny licked it up. I came on here to check if avocado is okay, only to find out that it is toxic. Do you think he’ll be okay if it was such a small piece? What should I do?

I don’t know how much avocado is toxic. It is to many pets. Vets will usually give activated charcoal if it’s ingested. If you have a regular vet I’d give them a call and see what they say about the amount, if you haven’t already.

We love avocado here, and have taken up to putting all the animals in their cages/pens when we eat it just to be safe. We store them in an enclosed wicker basket kept up on a high shelf, once ripe we put them in the fridge.

If it’s been many hours, (I don’t know what time-zone you are in), and he’s not showing symptoms but is acting his usual self and eats and drinks and poops, monitor him and give him hay and wet greens. You can call your vet if you are worried and if he starts acting/appearing weird, absolutely do call a vet. Avocado IS toxic to bunnies but there are different amounts of the toxin (persin) in different types of avocados and some bunnies will tolerate a small piece.

He’s acting normal, but it’s only been about an hour and a half. I gave him a bunch of his favorite hay that he has been happily munching on since. My local vet is closed today, and the closest one that is open today is an hour away. I do have my vet’s cell number in case of an emergency, but I’d hate to bother her if I’m overreacting. I have a bunch of activated charcoal capsules here at home I don’t know if there’s a way to give him some?

If you have your vet’s cell nr, I really think you should call her, if she says go to the ER vet, you go. If she says just monitor your bun, you do that. I only know that rabbits have died from eating avocado, but I don’t know how much is lethal and I can’t make any reassuring assumptions.

You can give a bunny activated charcoal at a dose of 1-3 gm/kg body weight. It would have to be mixed wioth water and syringed. We are not vets here and I’ve never given activated charcioal to a rabbit, but there are many mentions of it on various websites and we’ve had a case here on the forums where a bunny had activated charcoal, although administered by a vet.
