Aussie Bunny owners….. Myxo alert for New South Wales… There is a mozzie plague pending and they are carrying Myxo virus…As you all know the “numpty head up their bum witless couldn’t find their arse with both hands” pollies have banned us from vaccinating o buns against myxomitosis (Even those cruds introduced it)

Mozzie plagues are anticipated so get your buns inside ASAP if they aren’t a;ready…… Victoria, South Australia and QLD should take note as Mozzies don’t respect borders or quarantine.

Oh god, this is terrible news! Rufus is indoors but then so am I most of the time and I am COVERED in mozzie bites. So scary. I might get him a mosquito net to go over his cage just in case. Thanks Roberta!

I don’t live in Australia but it still is scary to think about myxomatosis. I don’t really let my rabbits outdoors too often during the fall and late summer seasons, and to be truthful, I really don’t do it very much in general. The rabbits had an ear mite out-break due to the fact that the two new piggies we adopted had ear mites and it was passed on from there.

A rabbit vet visit at our vet costs $50 per rabbit, and if you multiply $50 by 4 ear-mite infested bunnies, it can make a human(especially my husband) livid. Plus the cost of the special meds to clear up the ear infection that was caused by those pesky mites!

Ever since then, I’ve been a little, shall we say, paranoid about letting bunnies outdoors to play on a harness or such. I take our rabbits in for a checkup twice a year, and any extra costs can be very irritating. Sure, health problems can still happen, but if any rabbit got very sick from being outside or even died from myxo, I’d never forget it.

Myxo outbreaks have been heard of in our state(Michigan), and so this summer I plan to avoid any outdoor playtime. We live by a lake, so the Mosquitos are even worse….

Oh no! Thanks for the alert. Chester is inside but every morning I wake up covered in mosquito bites

I think im going to have to cover his “area” with fly screen now

KMart has some good mains powered mozzie zappers at a very reasonable price, I think the one I bought was $19… I did have a cordless one but some bunny ate the charger cable….. Mozzie coils are good too… You can get the mortein one that has it’s own enclosed burner with 20 coils, if you put that outside near the doors it will help keep them out…. Sticky window traps are also good… I got some on Ebay that look like sunflowers and they nailed the mozzies easily, sadly they don’t get the flies. Mosquitoes also hate Lavender so putting fresh lavender leaves about should help too, especially near door ways where people walk on them and release the oils… They may get eaten if encountered by a bunny but Lavender is on the Safe food list so not a big problem. I managed to keep the moz down for years by having huge Lavender bushes in my garden, unfortunately between the heat waves and the drug addict neighbour that insisted on working in my garden I no longer have Lavender bushes, in fact my entire garden is dead.

Hope all your Aussie buns stay safe! Such brutes for not letting you vaccinate them, they introduced myxo in the first place to control the wild rabbit population didnt they!?

They Certainly did Anna and when they released the Calicci virus so many people lost domestic pets there was a united outrage which forced them to release the vaccine…. Bloody numpties we have running this country. If the knob in charge would spend less time trying to get the press to photograph him in his budgie smugglers kissing babies and more time listening to the population we might get somewhere.

I was wondering if I should give Rufus a dose of Revolution? Just in case of fleas… I know Myxo can spread by fleas as well. Do you think it’s necessary?

How selfish not to let people vaccinate domestic pet rabbits.   Rotten ##%#

Sorry to hear this  outbreak is out again. May all your bunnies and pets be safe from this awful disease

Thanks Roberta for the warning (I haven’t heard ‘anything’ about it here, but I guess that’s cause we QLDer’s ‘don’t’ need to know?!?!?).
The best part of your post? Showing the hubby your description of our PM! LOL! He said you got it spot on! Ha ha hah!

How silly not to let people vaccinate their pets…

I have learned so much Aussie slang from your comments on this thread Roberta!

I think it’s ridiculous that you can’t vaccinate you pets there. Especially if they are spayed/neutered. I hope everyone’s bunnies stay safe!

Roberta! Don’t tell/show anyone! You’ll halve our tourism! (if not more, lol!). How embarrassing – do we have to tell the world that is how our PM gets around in Parliament? Ha ha ha hah…..
PS – you know, I never think to translate ‘budgie smuggler’s’ – good on you!

Edit/Add – have you seen the latest ‘drumstick’ add? It is sooo good (actually spot on), I reckon Tourism Australia will be using it soon to advertise us to world! Ha ha hah….

They have reasons for doing it, whether you agree or not, but yeah, that’s really unfortunate for people with pets =/ I wish there was a better, more humane solution

lol when I read “budgie smugglers” I thought there’d been a scandal where a politician was linked to people who were illegally smuggling birds.  Nope.

That seriously sucks about the diseases though.
