i have this theory- if i over prepare, i guarantee the worst will miss us. the moment the severe weather alerts start going out, i start getting ready. i round up and cage whichever rabbit is out at the moment, confine the cats to one room, set the kennels up in the hall, pull out the storm kit and obsessively check the flashlight batteries, pull all the coats out of the closet and make it “fun” for goose with pillows, blankets, and books, then sit back and wait, while my husband laughs at my obsessiveness. if the weather alerts are upgraded, everyone goes in the kennels. that way, if there is a tornado, i just have to grab the kid and duck in the closet, knowing everyone is a safe as i can make them.
in alaska, we had an earthquake/volcano plan, including a list of shelters that would accept pets and rescue groups that would temporarily foster them if we had to evacuate. by being over prepared, i guaranteed that anchorage got no more than a light dusting of ash when mt redoubt erupted in ’09. lol
