All my friends say I’m stupid for being “obsessed” with my bunny. Um excuse me, but I didn’t realize it was stupid to love your pet?
They all ask me why I would get a rabbit spayed because it’s “a waste of money.” I told them that if Luna doesn’t get spayed she’ll be at a high risk for getting cancer. This is their response, “So? Just get a new one if it dies. Rabbits are cheap and it’s not like they have a personality.” Uh rabbits have NO personality?! They clearly don’t have a clue what they’re talking about AT ALL!
It completely irked me to hear them say this.
Wow. These are your friends?
Even if it weren’t about rabbits, I would expect friends to be supportive and not judgemental. I would ask them to be a bit more sensitive to what you find important and that they not make such strong comments about things they have no experience with. I guess there will always be times when others opinions will clash badly with our own. Let it roll off you and do what you think is right.
These are mostly guy friends saying this. They probably think they sound “macho” by saying this but really, they’re just making themselves sound like jerks.
Try not to take it personally. While he never made comments like this, my dad was VERY skeptical at first of Eddie. Maybe it’s a male thing, but none of the men I’ve told about my rabbits have ever really understood it. They can’t believe they have personality, can be litter box trained, etc. My dad still doesn’t think mine should be free in my apartment and that I should spend money on them at the vet, etc. But he doesn’t say anything cause he’s my dad and he knows how much I love my furbutts. Maybe men can’t seem to wrap their heads around rabbits as pets because most of them wouldn’t choose to get one themselves.

Don’t worry, my own mom says the same stuff to me.. she wont let me have mine spayed as she says why spend $400 on a $15 bunny thats only going to live a few years.
mind you she finally admits that they do have personality.. after she spent some time with hershey and had twix purring
but don’t listen to them.. pass it off as jokes. you always have us, we dont critisize you, we understand. they dont. were like our own species ![]()

My hubby adores our little fluffballs ![]()
That’s why I love this site so much! We can talk about our little fluffballs and others actually understand!
I have one guy friend who loves Luna to death! I even had him watch her when I couldn’t take her with on a family trip. He’s great with her and came to my house twice a day to play with her and care for her. After a week of that he even wanted a bun for himself! So it shows not all guys have to be Mr. Macho all the time (Thank goodness!)
I will just pass it off as a joke. However, I won’t allow one friend to even go near Luna because he tells me that he’d chase her and try to scare her. I definitely wouldn’t put her through that :\
rar! That would irritate me tremendously.
Just goes to show what people assume when they have absolutely no idea what they’re talking about!
Roar ![]()
My boyfriend ADORES my bunny, my dad LOVES her also!
I find that rude about what your male friend said about ‘So? Just get a new one!’ Rabbits cannot be replaced. We owners will move on, but, that bunny is forever in our hearts. And saying SO to cancer, pet or not, just hurts ![]()
![]()
I would ignore those buttheads. It isn’t THEIR pet. They obviously are stupidheads ![]()
I agree wholeheartedly with Brittany. Total stupidheads.
: P
dont listen to what other people says.like the saying..’the worth of an object(pet) is determined by the owner’..not other people.
deffinatly stupidheads!!! (:
It’s too bad that no matter how stupid people are, they’re never stupid enough to not know how to open their mouths.
I agree with jerseygirl and many of the other comments.
I think we have all had these kind of comments, my one responce is to tell explain that i too thought rabbits were bouring, as I had only met them stuck in small hutches, that made them depressed. Rabbits who have time to run around and interact with you are more like a cat or dog and each one has a different personality.
I find letting them know a small fact can sometimes help people understand. Like the “Rabbit Stew” comment that i am sure we’ve all heard more then we need to. There I just tell them, My rabbits are over a year old, it would be like eating mutton and would taste aweful. That usually shuts them up.
I think people who make these rude comments (with no facts, it’s like poop falling out there mouths when they open them) have little to no people skills, you don’t have to agree, but it’s called common sence and courtosy to not insult ones feelings or belifes (Your kid is ugly, am I going to tell you that? No.). I have said good by to a few ‘friends’ who were not able to keep the rude/hurtfull comments to themselves even after I told them straight out it hurts me.
I think age also play a part (though not always). I’ll never forget when i was a teen and had my guy friends over. I had my rescued and well mentally ill gerbil running around in her ball on the floor. That ball was her reason to live, she seriously loved it so much and it had taken me quite some time to tame her enough that i could get her in it (I could not touch her), This one boy felt it’d be funny to spin her rapidly inside the ball, I screamed at him, ran over stoped the ball to find her seizuring in the bottom of it…. she never went in the ball again, she was to scared.
I swiftly kicked him out of my home, and told him he would never be welcome back again.
I fell the same with peoples children, and so they are not allowed to visit my pets unsupervised, and if they try to harrass my animals they are not welcome back.
end of my rant LOL :p
He spun the ball while your gerbil was in it?! So inhumane
I’m sorry to hear he did that! I would have literally KICKED him out.
I let my two young neighbors visit with Luna once before. They just sat there, this is the quietest I’ve ever seen them. One asked me “Why does she have baby feet in the front and big feet in the back?” I thought it was so adorable since his eyes got super wide when he asked hehe. I was surprised they didn’t even try to touch her and just looked.
How sad that little 4-5 year old kids can be more polite than 17 year old boys.
My 28 year old brother thinks he’s being funny when he makes comments about rabbit stew. I’ll use that fact to shut him up next time he says it. -.-
I totally agree Brittany! They’re total stupidheads!
Some kids are just so awesome, ‘baby feet’ lol, so true. This weekend as i walked around the Vineyard event with PitStop in my arms, meeting and greeting, I had Adults ask to look at his tiny feet, they thought his little toes were the cutest thing. I’ve never been asked till then “can i see his toes?”
Yeah, the gerbil was inside
I am still mad over this. Never would i ever though a 19yr old (or anyone over 10) would think it funny to spin an animal inside a ball as entertainment. Though, i did meet a bunny who was put in a microwave by two 12 yr old boys…. Tino is the bunny and though his ears are all wrecked he is in good health and lives with a rabbit crazy lady who got him two girlfriend bunnies to live with ![]()
I love bunny feet
Wow people are stupid ):< putting a living animal in the microwave?! I'm glad Tino found a better home though.
*rolls eyes* total stupidheads is right!
i’ve run into this type of attitude many times. my response is to look at them with my best you-know-better-than-that look. you know… when you look at them as if over the top of reading glasses, furrow your brow and tilt your head slightly. some times adding a “come on. get serious” is called for too.
note that you have to hold the ‘look’ until they shut up. ![]()
I hate when guys talk that way just to be macho. It makes them so unattractive! My husband absolutely adores our rabbits (and everyone else’s on BB, he’s a lurker on here!). I know a few people that make jokes about rabbit stew and I know they’re just joking around but it does get to me. The longer we’ve had the rabbits the less they joke though. My brother-in-law would make jokes but when he called us up about finding that california rabbit in his yard, I saw his other side and he really did care for the hurt rabbit. So deep down there is a soft side in guys, it’s just hard to see in some. I really don’t see the difference between a rabbit, dog, cat or even baby, you love them all the same and would do anything for them (or at least for me I would
)
If those guys always make jokes about you having rabbits then what I would do is probably not discuss rabbits around them because they might just give you a hard time all the time. But they really should respect you more.
we should start a pictuure tread for skibubby’s hubby :p
Hmmm. i should make Smudgie do some cute things so I can take a ton of pics for a Smudge thread. *nods*
deffinatly do that mb ![]()
Um…my bunnies would like to thump your friends on the head for saying they have no personality….and everybun…bunny butt to the “friends”!
The older you get, the less you will care what people say about your rabbits and what you do.

He got all excited when I told him someone suggested a thread of bunny pictures just for him ![]()
Yet we have to sit through their boring stories of their kids. Ha. My bunny is more interesting than your kid lol
Thats how I feel at the masjid. When I said I had a baby gate to keep cotton out of the bedroom and ruby in my friend looked shocked and laughed and said a baby gate. She really had no idea. She is more interested in the kids since she runs the masjid sunday school. Thats ok. I know she didnt’ mean any insult.
They do ask how my buns are though. They care but some just don’t get it. lol. Then others like to hear the funny stories.
Now as far as being told so what if they get cancer etc I never hear that.
Except from hubby he says I waste $ taking them to the vet. HE isn’t so bad now that I have bun ins.
Yet we have to sit through their boring stories of their kids. Ha. My bunny is more interesting than your kid lol
LOL
Oh BT, I love you. lolol
DancingBun, I understand now you have said it was 17 yr old guys that said it. Makes more sense. Not all are like this of course but many say stuff without much thought. Especially when more sensitive comments are needed. In my own teens, I remember a guy once blurted out something really inappropriate when I’d said about losing a dog over the weekend. I think it’s because he didn’t know how to act around someone who was upset. Yet it was another guy the same age that cautioned him. He could empathize as he had a famliy dog and talked about it all the time.
Oh, but bunnies are more entertaining than kids ![]()
THEY DON’T CRY![]()
And they don’t need college funds. And you can lock em up if they are misbehaving without getting yourself arrested.
I <3 bunnies. lol
Bunnies win
I love waking up to my bunny every morning. If a crying kid wakes me up I’m not going to be so peachy!
Yeah, don’t listen to what people say if it’s negative, some people just don’t like animals at all, which in my opinion means they have very little empathy (including for other humans!)
I’m lucky to have had the opposite reaction with Bun-Bun… after years of just having cats, and most of my friends not liking my cats (they are quite aloof, and Misha my tuxedo cat scratched quite a few of my friends when she was young), the bunny is the king of popularity. I think also because he lived in our clinic for a little while and a lot of the general public saw him, a lot of people are interested in him and always ask about him, including people you think wouldn’t care like my boss’s teenage sons, and people who haven’t even met him in person. He was recently referred to as a Facebook celebrity! (I post more about him than myself.)
My sister made fun of me for doting on Bun-Bun, but she lives far away… now she’s visiting and has spent hours watching him, was jealous when he would only crawl in my lap and ignore her (he finally spent some time in her lap though.) My mom even painted a portrait of him!
That portrait is just beautiful. Your mom did that? Wow!
What a beautiful portrait Maya! Your mom is so talented.
Yeah my mom is an artist and art teacher. I also do art but more fabric/beadwork (I’m trying to think of how to incorporate rabbits into some of that now!) My mom produces far more art than she sells, I think she could have a lucrative side-business as a bunny portrait artist! ![]()
That is very pretty, Maya! I like the eye especially.
I check Etsy occasionally for rabbit art but many rabbit things there are still quite kitchy.
Thanks guys! I agree with you Petzy, I’ve been searching etsy a ton lately but I prefer the more realistic (like my mom’s painting), or line drawings, or abstract like the tile piece in the other thread. I did just buy a little pendant off etsy with an antique rabbit drawing laquered onto a scrabble tile… the rabbit looked very much like Bun-Bun! A lot of stuff is just goofy-looking or cheap though.
Bun-Bun has inspired us all, I’m even thinking about drawing my next tattoo, based on the Asian/Central American belief of the “Moon Rabbit,” thinking I could make the rabbit in the moon look like Bun-Bun… I tell you we’ve all gone crazy over the little guy.
That’s what happens with rabbits.
Funny about Moon Rabbit tattoo. Did you see the tattoo thread recently? There was talk about the chinese horoscope. Brittany is Fire rabbit. With the tattoos, I think the line drawings and tribal type designs look good.
I love everything in that portrait your Mum did. The colours, the botanic and or course Bun-Bun!
Let me just say I am so thankful to have found a website with people who love rabbits! I have been obsessed with them since I was born. I was finally given a rabbit from my boyfriend on my 22nd birthday and I cried!
I would say I am crazy about my little Enzo! I hate how people keep saying they are boring and do not do anything. I also hate how they expect me to keep him in a small cage all the time! There needs to be some more outreach on how people should treat rabbits! Enzo is the craziest and most entertaining bunny! He definitely shows personality!
Don’t listen to those losers who have no idea what they are talking about!![]()
I am sure your rabbit has lots of personality and deserves everything you supply for “him”!<–i say that because i read your post on the nipples. I am having the same issue!
My two little girl cousins came to visit (who own two dogs), and were just talking senseless as well! I could not believe it! They said how they heard rabbits are boring. The older one was even asking me if I would eat him or skin him when he dies!! I do not understand. From someone who loves her own pets so much, why wouldn’t she think mine deserves the same respect as her dogs!![]()

Hi Enzo’s Mommy. This is a really old post and the forum leaders ask us not to post on them. It will probably be locked after this but if you could bear it in mind. Really anything that has not been active for a month or more they prefer us not to reopen the thread. Start a new one instead..![]()
