for the past year and a half, shana and I have been eyeing moving to Gilbert, AZ from our current location just outside chicago.

Of course the major issue is moving the buns 2000 miles, and then keeping them cool once we get there. I have no problem with cranking the AC down to obscene temperatures in the summer to keep them comfy, and i will get them thier own individual seats on the plane if i have to. but i was wondering if anyone else here is from AZ and has any tips on how to keep your buns happy inside when its 115 outside in summer. The big thing is we are currently in a 2 bedroom condo and will be looking for a place at least 3x the size down in AZ (maybe even with a stairway, they buns would love going up and down and up and down).

I know that everytime we get a prescription of bun meds, they come from a roadrunner pharmacy in carefree, AZ.

can’t say i’m an expert but i went to arizona once in summer, it was 120 degrees but felt more like 80 because there was so little humidity. it almost made it dangerous because you could get heat exhaustion and not even feel that hot. i got SERIOUSLY sunburned there.

i like the image of two rabbits sitting each in their own seat on the plane. i wonder what in-flight movies they’d pick…

seems like pretty good advice. i’ve definitely noticed little banjo loooovvves condensed water on the sides of bottles and so on…

our buns havn’t been outside since 2006, we’re right by the airport and the planes are way too loud.

in a house,, they’ll have more bun space than we currently have human space.

if they’re gonna be indoors i’m guessing there wont be an issue with the heat, it’ll just be a matter of making sure the AC stays on!

Have you looked over the HRS Arizona chapter site? http://www.tranquilitytrail.org/   Appears to be a great little organisation. There’s a link to facebook page there also if you wanted to get more feedback from people living there.

On flying, I have learnt from the forums here that there are a few airlines that allow rabbits in the cabin for a fee. Carrier under or in front of your seat I believe. It would help to ease bunny slaves  minds having them right there with you!  I wish our domestic airlines allowed it.

Whoa, I used to live in Gilbert when I was younger! Funny coincidence, considering it’s a smaller town! From what I recall, the heat really didn’t feel that bad since it was so dry. I’m sure your buns will be plenty comfortable

The main thing with rabbits as I’m sure you know is that they are very susceptible to heat stroke. If they are comfortable with the temperature in your home now when it’s at the hottest out for Chicago, I would think they should be fine in Arizona. I wouldn’t think you will be changing your comfort zone in terms of temperature when you move there. At least not at first.

Should your bunnies seem hot, you can always put frozen water bottles in their cage/pen to help keep them cool. I also think they make cooling pads for dogs that might be an option but you’d have to be careful your bunnies don’t chew/eat it. Also tiles will help keep them cool as well.

We crank it down to 70 in the summer AND the buns get a fan blowing on them.

peppy how long ago did you live in gilbert? its a town of nearly a quarter million now… ooh,, and a bunny vet right near Higley and Germann roads.

wish i was there now instead of:

Okay so maybe that was 15 years ago, when the Gilbert was quite a bit smaller, lol.  But my ears still perk up (like a bunny’s!) at mention of it since some of my earliest childhood memories took place there.  I think a family friend is actually moving there soon too.
