Hello all, I’ve tried searching on this forum and in the net but couldn’t find much info (or maybe I’m searching in the wrong places).

I will be welcoming a little human bun into the house sometime soon and I’m really excited about introducing my little one to my beloved bunny. However I have been hearing a lot of concerns (from the parents and parents in law) that the rabbit fur may cause my little baby to have allergies.

I really don’t know how true this is. I have tried googling for more info but couldn’t find much research on this.

Has anyone of you had experience in this? If your baby developed allergies to the rabbit, how did you deal with it? I am really reluctant to rehome my rabbit if this indeed happens. The hubs and I were thinking if unfortunately our baby does develop allergies to horlicks, we will probably try to segregate the both of them first.

        Thanks all in advance!

Hello! It should be perfectly fine. I’ve had 2 newborns in the house since i got my bunnies and neither have been in the least bit affected. Not at all. They play in the same areas rabbits have been, one grew up and plays with them daily, feeds them, he’s TOTALLY fine. I don’t think this should be a problem at all.

Forum leader Little Puffy Tail already had two buns when she had her baby. The baby is a toddler now. LPT still has bunnies.

According to the hygiene hypothesis regarding allergies, a baby’s immune system needs training, and exposure is the best training. Here’s an article about that: http://www.livescience.com/54078-hygiene-hypothesis.html

It’s still a hypothesis though. And some kids will develop allergies even if exposed, so it’s not a fail safe method for preventing allergies.

Hello! What an exciting time! As Bam mentioned, I have a 3 1/2 year old and 2 bunnies. One of my buns was around when we brought her home from the hospital. She is amazing with the bunnies and they love her too. It was a lot of work when she was a baby, for sure, but worth it.

I found an old thread that I responded it when Everly was 1 years old so here ya go. Hope it’s helpful.

As for allergies, I don’t really know much about allergies but I’ve never had allergies nor my husband. As soon as Evi was born she was exposed to bunnies and hay, cats and horses (well, I think she was about a week before she met our horse. ) and she is fine.  But from what I’ve read of allergies, early exposure is better. There are DRs who are telling Moms to introduce peanuts much earlier than a few years ago. More kids are becoming allergic because parents are keeping them away from it so long.

You guys have really put my mind at ease. My in laws have been driving me crazy with the idea that I may potentially be exposing my baby to allergens and that I’m not being very responsible. ?

I’m going to just take this one step at a time. My bun girl is the sweetest and she’s a part of the family now. Can’t wait to introduce my baby boy to her!! Fun times ahead.
