Hi there everyone. ^-^ I got recommended to this website by someone that I was asking bunny questions to. I was jumping around this forum for a day or so and it looks like a good place to join for future bunny information. XD

I’ll just say it now: I don’t currently have a bunny. And I’ve never owned one in my life, but my boyfriend has had tons since his was little. We’re in the process of finding an apartment, and once that works out (and we’ve made sure it’s a safe place to live), we want to get a bunny. We’re also considering getting a kitten (I’m the cat person and he’s the bunny person), and from what I’ve read about bunnies and kitties, it looks like it could work out (though we both understand the cautions of it).

So yeah, I’m joining this to read more about bunnies and other information since I’m honestly clueless. ^-^; I’ve pet bunnies and I’m just ultra gentle because I’ve never had serious contact with them so I’m really scared of hurting or scaring them lol.

On another note, we’re dying to adopt a French-lop. They have one at this pet store that we go to and he’s huge and adorable! I absolutely fell in love with him and want one so badly. XD If anyone knows the best way to try to get one in Northern California, I would greatly appreciate it. We don’t mind if he’s a mixed breed, as long as he will still have his loppy ears (love them!) and will still be a big bunny, we’re happy.

Hello welcome to BB I just recently got my first bun and its even better than I had expected! They interact like cats and dogs do as long as you give them lots of love and it’s really quite rewarding. In terms of where to get a bunny I got mine from a breeder but I’m sure lots of people will tell you to have a look at any rescue centres near by you. They have loads of bunnies looking for a good home and you get all different varieties of buns in them – I would imagine they have pleanty of lop eared kinds! So yeah, welcome!

I’ve never owned a bunny, but I do think they’re just adorable and I’ve watched wayyy too many videos of them that it’s probably a bit unhealthy. Haha. My boyfriend has told me stories and he has always said that his lops had the best personalities – they would chase him around inside or outside and just be totally crazy.

I definitely want to push for adopting a bunny, because I totally agree on everyone’s viewpoints to save a life rather than paying tons of money to a breeder. Not only would adopting be a lot cheaper (we’re POOR), but I just love knowing that I rescued it. But it’s extremely hard to find any shelters anywhere near here that have bunnies, and it’s unlikely that I’ll end up finding a Frenchy.

Either way, I’m going to push the adoption before trying a breeder. I’d like to see if I can get help from people on here since it seems like everyone is quite knowledgeable about all of that stuff. >.<

Hello and welcome

I had a pet bunny when I was little ,but it was not my responsibility to care for the bunny. But now that I am older, I have had my little girl since she was young. It is a lot of adjustment, time, energy, and patience, especially if you get a young bunny. After 2 1/2 years, she is my joy, and I do not know what I would do without her.

I would make sure that you have the financial funds to have a rabbit. they can be quite pricey, especially for a spay or neuter procedure. It depends on your location, but having the procedure will save a lot of time and money, plus emotions. I got my lady bun spayed at 6 months of age. it scared me to find out that females have a 80% chance of reproductive cancer by the age of 4 if not spayed I want her to live a long life!

Welcome! I love French lops too. I do worry about the shorter life spans of bigger bunnies though — but those Giant breed bunnies (full or mixed) really get to me regardless.    Since you wanted to check adoption before breeders, check out petfinder.com  — put in your zip, and you will get a ton of nearby rescues. The likelyhood of finding a big loppy eared bunny (even if not a full frenchy) is high as actually here in Northern California, there are so many rabbit rescues and even many of the animal shelters have a great set-ups for their rabbits.  It is really unique around here.  Good luck!

And this is only to name a few — the Oakland Animal shelter, the Peninsula Humane Society, and many other animal shelters have a great rabbit areas. 

I also wanted to chime in about costs. You may be surprised with how expensive the vet bills are for rabbits.  The reason for this is due to their unique digestive system, and sensitivity to certain meds and anesthesia, along with typical “teeth” issues for certain breeds and/or aging rabbits, they are actually considered “exotics” in the vet field (— go figure!)  Meaning a vet needs additional training to be rabbit-savvy.   So you need a rabbit savvy vet.   So be sure to save a couple of hundred dollars at least for health issues – as when rabbits show illness, by the time they can no longer hide it, it is serious,and  you have to act fast and you need the $$ right away — so save, save save.  .

Welcome to BB! There is tons of info around this site and everyone here is really knowledgeable. Adoption is a great way to go, especially if you can find one that is slightly older and maybe already fixed, or can be fixed at the shelter before you bring him/her home. If the bun is too young to be fixed, my only piece of advice is not to worry when suddenly the little bun becomes a “teenager” at about 4 months and seems like they’ve gone through a personality change. It’s the hormones and everyone on here will recommend getting the bun fixed. The bonus is that everyone around here is super supportive and gives tips they’ve learned about pre-fixing and post-fixing. We also demand that you post pics of the bun once you have him!
