Someone shared this with me on facebook today and I thought it was interesting. A family found abandoned baby buns in their yard and one of them was paralyzed in its back legs. The son wanted to make life easier for it, so he and his dad took both bunnies in and made a little carriage for its back legs.

It is interesting, those are little cottontails. They won’t live long in captivity, unfortunately.

Oh geez, how adorable are those cottontails and how lucky that someone found them and has taken great care of them. That’s sweet that the little boy wanted to make life easier for Joe.

They are just adorable! Watching Joe drag his little legs around just about broke my heart, I’m glad they were discovered by people who are trying to make things easier

I actually have a friend who has a disabled cottontail that is about 6 years old now. Her husband accidentally ran over it with the lawnmower. It’s possible if these babies were eating on their own they will probably be okay – obviously captivity is never best and hopefully they will release Joe’s brother. I know Joe would not have lasted in the wild with his disability.

That’s interesting, everything I’ve read says they get stasis and will only last a few months most captive. I’m wondering if your friends was the exception, or if “everyone” says that to discourage people from taking in wild animals.

(It is a good thing here, I just hope they last longer than a couple months, it seems the family is really involved in the buns, as we all are).

I do know that if they are newborns or don’t have their eyes open and are still just taking mama’s milk that they have a very high mortality rate because it’s difficult to replicate their mother’s milk.

I think mainly the problem is when people try to feed those babies things like KMR which is not adequate for a wild rabbit that is very bad – better to keep them warm and get them to a rehabber.

I’m not expert though and have only gotten my info from talking to rehabbers and seeing their baby cottontails but never actually doing any type of rehabbing on my own.

I agree, they aren’t meant to be pets at all.
