My male 5 year old Dutch is a stickler about his nails. So I try to do it when I have the most time. He’s also had a history of banging them up, tearing them off, etc. Now he has one long nail that has turned completely BLACK accept for the tip. It doesn’t seem to bother him on his ventures. But I want to know if it’s safe to cut. Help!

It should be fine to cut it. You take off the tip first, then move the cutter back a little an repeat, repeat. I normally apply some pressue with the cutters and if the rabbit is not trying to pull away, it is safe to press further to make the cut. If they react when just applying pressure, it’s usually a sign I’m too close to the quick.

For rabbits with darker nails, I try take them out in sun & sometimes I can see the quick that way. Or I use a small torch and shine it right underneath the nail to see how much I can cut off.
