Ajax is getting neutered

So on Thursday Ajax has an appointment to be neutered. I was wondering what I should do before to prepare for it and after when he returns home? I don’t know a lot about rabbits (besides what I learned from the extensive reading I did beforehand), so any help would be greatly appreciated!

For a few days youll want to avoid him jumping too much (this include binkying, sadly), and youll want to avoid him running too much. If his cage has anything he can jump onto or climb, youll want to take it out for those few days. Likewise, youll want to keep him caged for a day or two to help avoid him running too much. Other than that, neuters are fairly easy on male rabbits and they usually bounce back to their normal selves within hours. Just make sure he eats, drinks, and poops as normal. Sometimes the pain killers given can cause abnormal stool, so its not too worry unless they become too squishy/wet/small

Don’t fast Ajax before the surgery. Sometimes a vet’s receptionist will tell you to do that, since they are more familiar with procedures on cats and dogs. Take some hay and greens/veggies to the vet when you go. They like to see that rabbits are eating before they let them go home. Make sure that you have some of Ajax’s favorite greens or fruit on hand, in case he doesn’t want to eat much afterwards. Some vets don’t send pain meds home with the bunny, they think that what they gave him after surgery will be sufficient, but you may be giving him some meds for a few days. Check out the surgical site after a day or two, to make sure that there is no redness or puffiness and that it looks like it is healing normally. If Ajax starts bothering the area, you may have to put a cone/collar on him, but bunnies don’t like those and it can interfere with eating, so don’t use one unless it’s really necessary.

The other members have pretty much covered everything, but I just have a couple of small tips.

Getting Ajax to eat (so he can poop) asap is paramount, so if all you can tempt him with is treats, feed him treats.

I would try to put some folded up fleece in his temporary tiny prison. Having something soft to stretch out on for the first day or so seems to make our shelter buns more comfy after snipping.

And finally, if your vet doesn’t already, I would insist on bringing home some liquid metcam painkiller. I don’t care what some “experts” say about it not being necessary after a neuter. A neutered bun has just had his skin sliced open, internal organs cut, and was then sewn up. He will feel pain after a neuter even if he’s extremely good at hiding it due to evolutionary reasons. He needs pain meds for a few days, if not for humane reasons, then simply because a bunny not in pain eats and toilets better.

So make a stink about it if you must – shed a crocodile tear or two – but get that little vial of metacam.
