air conditionning and my bunnie

I think the pet store staff told me it was bad for the buns (air conditioners I meen) and that it makes bunnies sick but I’m also aware that most house in the south US have air conditioning and that some people there probably have bunnies… So is it really all that bad and how do I make sure my air conditioner doesn’t disturb my bunny?

maybe if it were too cold it might be bad, but i keep my a/c on automated control so the room never gets too cold. if it gets too hot, they’ll burn up and the heat definitely affects their eating habits (they don’t eat as much when it’s hot). so i think mild cooling is good, use a fan if it’s in the 70s and bearable.

They may have been confusing air conditioning in general with drafts. Rabbits don’t like drafts, but if you have them in an area cooled by air conditioning and they aren’t directly in front of the air flow, I wouldn’t worry in the slightest. Rabbits are super sensitive to heat, as hophophop said (they can die if it gets over 80 degrees) but they are far more tolerant of cold. Remember- they have nice, fluffy winter coats. So, as long as your place isn’t a freezer, you’re fine. If you’re comfortable, your bun should be too.

My house has central air conditioning that runs most of the summer- and my bunnies are fine.  So A/C is ok- but bing exposed to a cold draft frequently might be hard on a bunny.

I have an older house in central Texas and it can really get hot even with central air conditioning. I got some window units last year and put a small one in the bunny room and it keeps them fairly cool. It’s not aimed at them and I keep the ceiling fan on low so the air is pretty well mixed and gently sent around the room. Since they all sleep all day anyway, I leave the blinds down and the curtains closed to help keep it cool in that room.

I’ve found so far that using the window units has cut my electric bill in half and the rooms stay cool now. (the one in the bunny room stays on 24/7 right now)

We also keep the ceiling fan on low in the bunny room, it helps to circulate the cooler A/C air and it prevents it from feeling “stuffy” in the house. Like the others said, heat is going to be more dangerous than being too cold, as long as they are not in a draft. Make sure there’s a hidey hole or cardboard box that they can go into also, if they do feel a draft.

the A/C broke down…figures it would durring the hottest week of the whole summer… So we tried the frozen bottle idea… I have honestly NEVER Seen my bunny so in love…. o_o

That’s just misinformation. Heat is much worse for bunnies, which is why the advice on how to cool them down is posted each summer.
I am in Florida, and it is essential to have AC, especially now.

What is bad for them is being in the direct path of a fan, so if you have a small window AC, for example, don’t blow it right on their cage. Don’t put a fan on directed at them to cool them off. But you can just use either one above the top of the cage to circulate the air, which is good for them, to keep it cool but not breezy/drafty.

I have central AC, and I’ve seen Sammy move to the spot on the floor below the vent to catch the coolest air possible. Bunnies and my boss: both are happy if the room is in the low 60s!

My bun loooves air conditioning! We keep the house under 80 degrees for him all the time. When he’s allowed out of his cage, he’ll often hang out on an air conditioning vent in the floor and wait for it to turn on. When it does, he’ll sit there for half an hour with his fur blowing in the breeze. I would make sure your bun isn’t in the direct path of the air, but if he chooses to sit in the draft while out of his cage, don’t worry about it.

I have been given the same advice as RabbitPam, that its just important that your buns don’t have a breeze blowing directly on them all the time. Otherwise, it is not only safe, but important to keep your bunnies cool.

Elrohwen makes an important point… if they CHOOSE to lay near the air conditioning vent, that’s fine… as long as they have the option to move away from it. If the cage is next to the vent, there is no option to get out of the way.

When we (the rabbits & myself) were in the school we didn’t have air conditioning.  It was awful!  We used the frozen water bottles, fans, and access to the linoleoum floors w/ special dark hidey spots.  They did alright.  It wasn’t my preference/choice but I think we did a very good job to keep them comfortable.  We used to set the fans to run near their cages, not directly on them.  They seemed to really enjoy the access to the linoleoum floors.

Since 2 out of 4 moved in w/ me, they get the AC on most of the summer.  The cats hate the ac, so they usually run upstairs (which is the attic) and lay around like desert beasts.  The only ones in the room w/ the AC are the rabbits.  We often open the windows at night & run fans, just to give the AC & electric bill a break.  The only time we leave it on at night is if its excessively steamey, i.e. near a rainstorm.  I would kill for a ceiling fan…that would be the BEST!!!!!

Being the temperature has been over 90 degrees here the past 40 days, and our bunnies live outside in a huge Hutch I did purchase an air conditioning unit and placed it outside their Hutch facing inward on an angle. They seem to really love it and if it does get too cool for them they go on the other side of the hutch but that is extremely rare that they do that. I have it on the lowest setting so it’s not blowing too hard in there and they’ll just sit there with their rear ends up at the air cooling off. It is so funny to watch them play with the air coming in. I’ve had the air conditioning for about two weeks now and they have not gotten sick so I think it’s safe to say that yes you can have an air conditioning unit but keep it on an angle so that if they want to get away from it they can.
