After surgery questions

So Nimmy broke his leg last week, we took him to the vet for x-rays then the following day he had surgery. The vet kept him overnight and we picked him up the next morning. When we picked him up there were only technicians in the office and none of them answered the questions I had. I’ve been calling since Saturday to try and get more information about what’s going to happen next but I’m getting very frustrated. These people are just passing me around “I’ll leave him a note and he’ll call you back.” or “I’ll go ask him then call you back” it’s so annoying! 

Maybe you guys can help me? Nimmy had a pin placed into his arm to keep everything straight and they placed a cast over it. I was told that they’d take x-rays again in 4-6 weeks and take it out. What’s the cost of this going to be? Is it like an actual surgery or is the pin hanging out of his skin so they can just pull it out? My mom is an MA and that’s what they do for humans, I don’t see why not for rabbits. The first surgery was $660, I struggled to pay that and over the next few weeks I’ll be saving every penny to make sure I can afford whatever comes next. It’d be nice to have a general idea of what’s going to happen, since I know absolutely nothing.

Anybody that had their animal break a leg can you walk me through a timeline of what happened? I’ve searched online and I’m only finding information about the initial surgery. I’ve got no clue about what happens next. Or if you know anything about this at all, any information would be very appreciated!

Can’t help you with a timeline.

Sometimes it is just a pin that is simply pulled out. If that is the case here, then it shouldn’t cost nearly as much as the initial surgery. I don’t know if the vet will be able to pull it out without sedation though. They may need to do that, not sure.

It sounds like the follow up should be significantly cheaper-from what you said it sounds like they would just do an x-ray to see how it’s healing. Can you take a close look at your current bill and see how much the x-ray portion was? That should give you an idea of your follow up bill.

Keep calling-my vet often didn’t get my messages because reception gets busy and they forget to pass it on. And if you can-show up and say you’ll wait to speak to the vet. You’re a customer and deserve the follow up!

I actually don’t think they charged me for the X-ray, but I’ll check… Oh. Yeah. They did. Ugh, $95 for the digital radio-graph. And it’s a straight $50 for them to even take a look at Nimmy. So that’s about $145 right there before they even think about taking out the pin. Ugh I wish I had gotten him the pet insurance. 

And I might head over tomorrow to speak with him. Nimmy is doing just fine, he’s actually being spoiled with new fruits and veggies almost every day. Like right now he’s got an orange slice in his cage. He’s also getting more and more accustomed to his cast (I saw him grooming it a few times… ) He used to trip over it when he hopped around, but now he’s able to lift it as he goes. I can tell he spends a bit more time lounging then he used to, but having that cast must be tiring.

Your vet doesn’t do a follow up fee? Mine charges an office visit fee if you are there for something new. If it is a follow up appointment, then the fee is considerably less (like half).
