After neuter naughties?

Okay, so we have had one bun, Gimli, for just over a year. He has always been a model citizen, super cuddly and playful but never destructive. He has had his own large space made by a plastic baby gate and we have never had issues. No chewing, no potty outside his box, nothing. Well, we got my son a bunny a few months ago and we want to bond them so last month we got Gimli neutered. Lately he has been a naughty but!! He chewed through the gate and ate some wires, keeps digging and pushing litter and poo out of his box, and just stares at me when I try to engage him in playtime now. Is this normal and will it pass? He now has to be locked in his cage whenever we are not in the room. I just left the room a couple minutes ago to get something to block the hole he made and he immediately escaped through the hole again. We are getting the other bun neutered in a couple weeks and they have not spent any time together yet so I don’t think it has anything to do with him. I want my angel bun back

It’s possible Gimli might be able to sense there is another rabbit in the home. You mention that they are not together (I assume separate rooms as well) but he can probably still smell your son’s rabbit either on you or in general. My neighbor bun-sat for me and Olaf wouldn’t go near her because her could smell her dogs. If not, he might also be going through the post-neuter craze. It can last for a few weeks (you said it was about a month ago?) because there is a surge of hormones after the surgery that can take a while to dissipate. I would give it a few more weeks to see if he settles down. My rabbit was similarly playful and never destructive but has gone through a few phases where he just needed to chew and bunstruct things. As long as he is eating normally I would give it time. The litterbox problem can be helped with a box with higher sides or a screen. Maybe offer some new cardboard boxes or play things that might distract from his destructive urges as well. Good luck!

How long has it been? Bunnies do go through a post-neuter craze. Not all. But many do. They usually calm down after a final surge about 6 weeks out. But it can take 8 weeks in some cases.

Bramble was a nutter for a good few weeks after he was neutered. He also went mad when we first brought Ron home despite them never having even seen each other. He definitely knew there was another rabbit in the house there was an obvious change in his behaviour and not for the better I might add, he was doing things he had never done before such as thumping (bramble never thumps, Ron does that for him now lol) it settled completely once we started bonding them. I wonder if you have a combination of a post neuter craze and an ‘omg there is a new bunny here to play with’ phase
