advise on rabbit seizure

hi guys this is my first post unfortunetly its not a happy one.

sunday i bought lola a 2yr old opal netherland dwarf as a new girlfriend for my neutered buck huxley aged 5 as he lost his previuos girlfiend a couple of months ago, it coudlnt have gone better less than 24hrs they bonded.

sadly when i came home yesterday evening i let them out for playtime she went under my kitchen table and wanted to get her out as previously huxley had decided to chew one of my dining table legs which he never chews the little bugger. as i tried to get her out she ended up having a huge seizure i couldnt grab her and she knocked her head a couple of times when i got her i held her and thought i was loosing her as her eyes were rolling back. she came around a couple of minutes later ears up eyes bright but her balance and movemnet wasnt good.

this morning she is still same but able to support herself better on her back legs, she sways though.

got an appointment with the vet and shes given her painkiller and antibiotics for 10days.

it really upset me and my partner and i was worried she would pass away and that would be so upsetting for huxley.

what are peoples experinces and how long do they take to recover, vet has said she could unless something neurological.

Every time a seizure happens, a degree of damage is done to the brain. If that’s the case, it usually doesn’t recover very well if many episodes have occurred. If your bunny’s seizure is a one time thing, because she’s scared and not because she has a neurological disease, then i think it won’t affect her as much unless there’s some major damage with that one seizure/hitting her head a couple of times.

You can monitor her for at least couple more weeks to see if there are any more seizures… sometimes they scream. Dwarfs , and or blue eyes are usually prone to seizures because of their breed.

You will want to keep a journal on hand to write the time, date, and a little summary on what happened before she has a seizure and what happens during her seizure (help her before writing the notes, of course). Hopefully it only happens once, but if it does happen more often, having the journal with you when you go to the vet can help them determine what is causing the seizures. Of course, if it does happen more than once, you should consider having a brain scan done to ensure its not bugs or tumors that are effecting her brain. A blood test may also help in giving an idea what is causing them

thank you for both getting back to me. she is on both metacam and baytril shes also having a cause of panacur incase the stress and seizure has brought out the ec.
she is eating well currently munching on kale but still wobbly managing more to groom herself more than what she did this morning. she has full movement in both back legs and her front left but her front right foot doesnt seem to have control of it she has movement in the top right shoulder.

i have contacted her breeder and she isnt aware of any other seizures.

she is being the perfect patient though

It is very wise to keep a diary. I hope it won’t happen again, but if it does you need to contact your vet again. She could have a congenital problem or she could possibly have a parasite that needs treatment with Panacur, a dewormer.

Sorry, I was late to that. I’m glad you have those meds now, they’re standard protocol for a suspected case of e cuniculi so you seem to have a knowledgeable vet. That’s great, there are even vets who’ve never even heard of e cuniculi =/

unfortunetly the vet never even mentioned it, it was only due to research etc that i decided to panacur i did however contact my vet to make sure she could have this along with her antibiotics and painkillers.

she seems much brighter today shes really responding to my voice and has been managing to groom much better its still this front right paw, hoping in time she will make a full recovery.

can rabbits fully recover from a seizure? i know its only early days i just feel so sorry for her when she looses her balance and falls over. its the he back end goes before he front.

It can take awhile, especially if it’s EC. But they can get better. Maybe not 100% but close. Right now, just keepy doing what you’re doing. The panacur will help if it is EC, but it will take awhile before you see improvement.
