Bombur and Asriel will be 6 months old in just a week and a half, which is unbelievable that they been with me almost 4 months. Up until they turned 5 months I was feeding them unlimited pellets. Since they turned 5 months I dropped down to a half cup. When they turned 6 months I was going to steadily decline their food until they are getting 1/8 cup a day. So do 1/3 cup for 2 weeks then 1/4 cup for 2 weeks then 1/8 cup. Is this a good idea? Bombur is a bit of a pig and gobbles his half cup by midday and Asriel will still have some left cause he’s a hay muncher. I just don’t want to drop the pellets suddenly.
Also any recommendations for an adult food? I was thinking Oxbow cause I’ve heard great things about them. Currently they eat Purina Advantage, but it’s primarily alfalfa, so looking for a good adult bun food.
        Thanks!

1/8 cup of pellets per bun per day is exactly what you should be feeding Asriel and Bombur now that they’re full-grown; that is what I feed Panda and Fernando. I recommend Oxbow Essentials Adult Rabbit Food, it’s what I feed my own, and the package instructions specify 1/8 cup/day per 5 pounds body weight.

My vet recommends Oxbow, but Burgess is good too.

Thanks guys! I’ll probably go with Oxbow cause it’s so widely available. I’ve never seen Burgess in my area. My boys it turns out are both false dwarves and will be around 5ish pounds. Oxbow’ website says feed them 1/4 cup of pellets a day. I was always told an 1/8 cup. Also, now is the time to go on adult food, right? Again, their website said not until a year old. I just don’t want to end up with obese little 6 month olds ?

Don’t forget to slowly integrate the adult pellets by mixing a little at a time with the juvenile pellets .

I already had that planned out. Their juvenile food is almost gone that’s why I asked if it’s ok to start switching to adult food.

I never follow the recommended amount on the packet

Apollo and Luna weigh 2.5kg and 3kg. The each only get 1/2 tablespoon of pellets per day. Mostly because Luna has a sensitive stomach. When I had Bandit, he weighed 3.2kg and I used to feed 2 tablespoons a day, I probably wouldn’t feed more than that except for maybe a giant breed.

At 6 months they’re still building muscle and getting a more dense skeleton, so they need a bit more food than the fully adult buns who “just” need to maintain a healthy weight. But as a rule, serving sizes on packages are way too generous. It’s the same with dog food. I think the best thing is to weigh the buns regularly.

I go very light on pellets now – one teaspoon twice a day, accompanied by two cups of greens (including veg & fruit as fresh treats) twice a day. Chewie’s 4lbs
