Accident – Is vet visit necessary?

Hey! 

Its Sunday, 8pm here in Norway.

About an hour/hour and a half ago, I was in the kitchen refilling my water bottle, and when I got back to the living room Lola was roaming around my feet to see if maybe I brought a treat for her from the kitchen. My water bottle is a bit slippery with no edges to get a grip on and before I knew it it slipped out of my hand and landed right on her head! She ran under the desk and sat there for a minute. I tried to reach her to see if I could pet her and check her over but she stomped and wanted nothing to do with me. My bf brought out some pellets for her, we figured since she loves her pellets, we could see if she was really hurt based on whether she would come out to eat them or not. She came out and ate her pellets with no problems. After about a minute I was able to check her over and I was allowed to touch her head. There was a little blood just below her nose, and a tiny bit around her mouth. I was crying, and was really scared that she was really hurt. My bf called the ER vet, and she told us that as long as she is conscious and eating, and no visible wounds, she would most likely be fine, that we wouldn’t need to take her in tonight. About five minutes after the accident, she was munching hay and her salad just fine. She is laying down flopped on the floor in front of our couch right now. She seems fine, and it stopped bleeding after 2-5 minutes. She is laying down like she normally would, no awkward pose. She has been in and out of her cage. Do you guys think she is fine? We are trying to leave her alone for a little while and not fidget too much, trying not to stress her out. We are planning to take her to the regular vet tomorrow.

Is there anything we can/should do? I plan on picking her up and chech her over properly afterwards and take a look in her mouth to see If I can see anything. I just don’t want to stress her out more than necessary. I feel so guilty.

If the vet said to wait, I think you should do as you’re told. If she’d been a kid perhaps an extremely cautious doctor would order a CT-scan, but she isn’t a kid.

Honestly, if her level of conciousness seem normal, if she’s eating etc, there’s not a lot more to do than keep her warm and comfy and keep a good old eye on her. Then you can call your regular vet in the morning.

I understand your feeling guilty. When my dog was a small pup, a broom fell over her and the metal stick hit her smack in the forehead and I was so scared.

It sounds like she might have bitten her lip or cheek. The big risk will be infection, but I agree that this doesn’t sound like an emergency. You should be okay to just keep an eye on her and look for signs that she isn’t eating, or is having trouble eating. Depending on she does, I might take her in to your regular vet this coming week.

Obviously, any lethargic behavior, inability to stand, seizures, or not eating/pooping would warrant a vet visit.

Okay thanks for the input guys. I feel a little bit better. And Beka, that makes sense, it she managed to bite her self. I’ll post an update on how she is doing later on. Right now she has eaten a bit more hay and is just relaxing.

Update: she has been eating and pooping fine, and she hopped around for a bit. She maybe isnt as energized as she usually is but she is still acting like her usual diva self, which is great.
We picked her up and looked her over, and checked her mouth. We couldnt see any wounds, so were hoping it was just something minor. Ill post again if the situation changes.

That’s awesome news!!

I agree with Beka-if you hit your head, often you bleed just from some trauma in the mouth caused by teeth so that’s likely what it was. I’m glad the ER vet was helpful and told you what to watch without making you go in! What a great resource!
