A couple questions about the death of a bunny

Today we lost Biscuit suddenly. I’ve never been through a bunny death and I have a couple questions.

As you know, Biscuit was bonded with Obie. He was keeping watch over her when we got home. After my husband removed Biscuit to be buried, I sat with Obie. He must have been upset because his little head was hanging low. He let me pet him for several minutes (which is highly unusual for him). We let him out for a run and gave him some raisins. He explored and even binked once bit after a bit he went back in his cage and laid there. I have seen him drinking and elliminating so far. But tonight he is just laaying there, his head where we found her body. It so sad.

So my questions are:
How do bunnies grieve and how can we help them?
How soon should I clean out their cage and is it best to try to remove her smell?
Would Obie possibly benefit from having a stuffed friend to snuggle, now that he was used to her?

I have no idea BM, but I am tearing up again reading this…. it’s just so dam sad! and unfair!
Gosh, do you know I had to stop reading the rainbow bridge forum’s – I end up a mess every time.
I sure someone can give you guidance, I am so sorry you are all having to endure this and I can’t offer you any help.

Oh Sweetie, I am so sorry… I had the sudden loss of Blossom recently and know what you are going through. Blossom was part of a quartet but the loss was no less devastating not only to me but to her Mummy Pepper, Dad Piglet and Sister Pipi, even Nomnoms in the adjacent pen was out of sorts and grieving. I think a plushie is a good idea, it atleast gives Obie something to snuggle against. With mine atleast they had each other though Piglet is still lost… Pipi is Mummies little girl and is always with Pepper but Blossom was daddy’s special girl and was always with him grooming and snuggling and trying to cut in when Pepper and Piglet tried to have mummy daddy time (they didn’t mind though) Piglet has always been affectionate but he is now actively seeking extra attention and coming to me for long chin rubs and cuddles and snuggling close and tooth purring when I am with him. It’s like he has lost some of his soul and doesn’t know how to fill the space… Obie needs affection and love which I know you already give but the extra scratches and cuddles will be appreciated and spending time with him just being there will help.

I’ve lost Thumper Mischief and Amber over a year and a bit and it wasn’t easy. while Thumper was dying Mischief just kept snuggling him as if he knew he wouldn’t see him anymore and after Thumper died Mischief would sit in the corner all day. Benji didn’t act different when mischief died I did all the grieving. and when Amber died again Benji didn’t seemed affected but Luna went from an in your face bunny to sit in the corner bunny.

I just left Mischief and Luna alone for a day just so they could get use to not having the other rabbit around but kept on checking on them

I would just leave the cleaning until your normal cleaning day

and a stuff toy would be great for Obie as long as he isn’t a chewer or you will be needing to replace the toy a lot

I would just keep checking up on him and give him a lot more affection and he will bounce back in no time as he will realise that he isn’t alone.
