So we’ve had Oswin less than a week…she’s a 3 year old mini lop. Originally we had her in an old cage we used for my bun Loki…but Oswin was MUCH bigger than loki (She was a mini lionhead) so we put her in one of those dog cages for extraaaa large dogs.
At first, she went on strike and didn’t want to go in, and then when she DID go in, she didn’t want to come out. She’s using the litterbox now, and we have one of those automatic dispensing waterers (like for cats) since she didn’t want to drink for the bottle.
She gets 1/2 a cup of plain pellets a day (not the best, but not the worst) unlimited hay (including fresh cut fuzzy grass, clovers, and dandelions) and usually a salad consisting of Spinach (occasionally), Mint (every other day) kale, parsley, and occasionally celery.
She isn’t acting lethargic, but she doesn’t really seem interested in her food or anything. The only one she’ll interact with is my 6 month old kitten, Artemis. Her poos are normal, and she’s eating just really slowly.
I also offered her a strawberry this morning (loves them) and she didn’t even want it ![]()
I know that she’s not spayed, and we plan on getting it done once my school refund comes in…I guess I’m just curious as to whether she’s acting sick or just adjusting. she was fine until we moved her into the bigger cage :/
I would go in for a wellness exam at the vet. My mini lop girl, Hannah, acted similarly when I got her (also at 3 years old) and her teeth ended up being worn unevenly so it was causing her some discomfort when she ate. She still ate, but very slowly. After getting her teeth fixed, she was eating normally.
Well, today has been trying.
We scheduled an emergency appointment for Oswin today, but as my husband was backing out of the yard he hit one of our cats. So the cat went instead of Oswin, but she has an appointment tomorrow afternoon.
The vet gave me some critical care until then. She says it just sounds like a tooth problem. What is the best way to give Os the critical care?
Well. We took Os to the vet yesterday and it turns out because her previous owners hadn’t fed her hay except as a treat, her teeth had worn into overgrown points and she couldn’t eat
This had also led to an eye infection.
She is on Baytril for the infection, Meloxicam for the pain and is being fed critical care 4 times a day until next friday, when she goes in to get her teeth filed. I also figured since she would already be put under, to have her spayed at the same time.
poor bunny
Hopefully things will go better for her after this!
Poor bunny!
She’s lucky to have such good owners that are getting her taken care of, though. I hope she recovers fast, and I hope your cat is okay. That sounds like an awful couple of days..
Well, we actually had to have the cat put down that day
There was nothing that could be done for him, and when they did the xray they found a tumor….I’m really lucky to have a vet who is rabbit savvy AND will let me make payments. Plus, I’m getting a pretty good deal on Friday. Oswin’s Xrays, bloodwork, anesthesia, overnight stay, dental exam and filing, her nails getting trimmed, and her spay is LESS that $220.
I’m just worried about her eyes.
She’s eating critical care, and taking her antibiotics but they are definitely more runny than they were. Plus her poops are soft >_< Friday can't get here soon enough. My mother in law thinks that her previous owners got rid of her because they knew she was sick. The vet said she could tell that Oswin hadn't been eating properly for awhile :[
For some reason I completely missed this thread when you posted it? This is strange b/c I’m on BB almost everyday… IDK…
First off, I am so sorry about your cat. That is so heart-breaking to have to make the decision to let an animal pass. It sounds like your cat’s days were likely numbered anyways, and maybe the silver lining is that your cat didn’t have to go through long and drawn out surgeries, recoveries, medications, etc. (((Kitty)))
On to Oswin… hopefully your vet never leaves the area or changes profession… you are getting one heck of a deal! One thing I don’t see listed: take-home pain meds. Vets will usually give a 3-5 day supply for their spay patients. Make sure you get some to give at home. She’ll be dealing with the discomfort of the spay incision AND any residual “ouchiness” of the dental filing.
That is wonderful that the vet is going to get both procedures done at once. Less stressful on you, less stressful on the bunny to only have to go under once.
Once her teeth are taken care of, it’s likely that the eyes will follow. She has so much going on right now. Take it one step at a time. Get the teeth and spay done. Let her get healed and then you’ll see if the eyes were just a symptom of the teeth.
Keep us posted on how she does!
I’m so sorry to hear about your cat.
And wishing Oswin good luck for her surgery and speedy recovery.
Thank you everyone for the wellwishes!

Lots of vibes for Oswin…
Sorry for the loss of your kitteh, my Twinkletoes pass away early on June 5, she was 24 and we have been together for 22 of those years. Twinkers passed away at home and I got to spend the Public Holiday Monday with her stroking her ears and paws.
Oh my gosh!!! She is such a pretty girl! I love her “salt and pepper” coloring!
Thank you :3 I love her handlebar mustache <3 Roberta, I'm sorry for your kitty
It sounded like she had a very long and happy life!
I made Oswin some new toys and added a ramp to her house. I also gave her a soft mr. buns to cuddle. >_> Even though they choose to cuddle in the litterbox.
She’s such a cutie! You’re very lucky she eats the Critical Care on her own, most bunnies won’t.
I know O_O She literally gobbles up her critical care. It makes me feel better, because I honestly feel like she has enough stress without me shoving a syringe in her mouth.
Tomorrow is the big day. Now I’m getting all anxious ![]()
((((Well Wishes for Oswin for a speedy recovery)))))
I’m a little livid with my vet right now. We dropped Os off at 8:30, they said everything was fine. I verified what was going to be done, and that we were good with the payment plan.
apparently the vet who okayed Os getting spayed at the same time, did so without the owner of the company’s permission. I get a phone call after I dropped her off that since the head vet is back from vacation, he decided they could only do the dental work today and weren’t going to do the spay.
Which I understand, but I also feel like it’s a bit rude since they agreed to both procedures LAST friday. UGH >:[
That is incredibly frustrating and ridiculous. I would be mad too. Would have been much easier on you both. ![]()
Well, she’s home now and hates everybody.
She’s eating hay, at least. So I’ll take that as a good sign. Gonna keep her on her antibiotics until she runs out…feed her some critical care tonight.
Her eyes are all wet and runny, though. Side effect of being under?
When they put a bunny under, they put an ointment over their eyes to keep them from dying out. So yes, it’s normal ![]()
Also, it’s not unusual for a bunny’s mouth/teeth to feel a bit sore after they grind down the points etc. So don’t be alarmed if she still has a little trouble eating hay for a couple of days. Sounds like she isn’t having troubles and is eating hay but she may not be vicarious about it at first.
(((Vibes for oswen))) she may not have had a great start but it seems like your going to take great care of her! I hope she’s doing better now! In some ways I guess it’s better she’s not spayed at the same time anyway as she she can recover one surgery at a time, although getting it all done at once would’ve been much easier! Hope she’s feeling much better today!
Oswyn has been doing fine this weekend :] She’s eating normally, and is even more curious about her surroundings. She has 3 more doses of her pain meds, but her teeth don’t seem to be bothering her so much.
She doesn’t want to use her litterbox now, though x.x
