50lb bag of food for 1 bunny? Would it “go bad”?

It seems like the 50lb bags of rabbit food are definitely the best value, but I worry that with just one bunny only getting 1/3 cup a day, the food will go stale or bad or something before I finish it.  Does anyone here buy 50lb bags of food for 1 bun?  How do you keep it fresh?

You can repack the food into smaller zip lock bags and then freeze it for a few months.

Yeah, that’s the only thing I know of. Do you have the room in your freezer to do that? I guess it would be a trade-off to decide if you want to pack that in the freezer. I kind of think you should get a smaller bag and see how long it actually takes you to use it…put a date on the bag or container so you know when you started it.

Using 1/3 of a cup a day from a smaller bag of food actually lasts quite awhile. That’s approximately what I am feeding Sully and I buy the 5lb bags of Oxbow. This bag has lasted me 2 months and I still have plenty left. I think it’s worth it to get the smaller bags and keep the pellets fresh!

Using 1/3 of a cup a day from a smaller bag of food actually lasts quite awhile. That’s approximately what I am feeding Sully and I buy the 5lb bags of Oxbow. This bag has lasted me 2 months and I still have plenty left. I think it’s worth it to get the smaller bags and keep the pellets fresh!

Wow, really?  I guess I was thinking I’d go through a 5lb bag fast, but I didn’t really think it all the way through I guess.  Perhaps it would be easier to just stick with a smaller bag.

Sometimes pellets can be slightly different too depending on the season when they were manufactured. So be careful you don’t get stuck with 50lbs that they turn their nose up at! I buy approx 10lb bags from a feed store. They package smaller bags up out of their large ones and it still seems economical to buy this way. Bulk feed repackaged. I freeze 3/4 of it in an airtight container.

By the way, I like your avatar image. Makes me smile each time I see it. Then there’s that disapproving Zeus to top it off!

That’s a REALLY good point.. Zeus is kinda picky (he won’t eat raisins OR banana chips!), so it would really stink to buy 50lbs of a food he won’t eat.

I’ve toyed around with the idea of ordering 25 pounds for my pair, but really… they get such a limited amount of pellets, there’s no point in storing it that long and risking it going bad. Hay on the other hand, I have been buying and in bulk and saving a ton of money! Veggies, of course, you can’t buy in bulk!

Yeah I think I will stick to 5lb bags, it sounds like it will just be easier in the long run, even if I do have to spend like a dollar or two more.  Some good news too, I found a brand of timothy-based pellets that I like the analysis of!  Kaytee Timothy Complete.

I buy a 40lbs bag for 6 rabbits, some of it get wasted, I think I get a bag a month (I keep it in a tupperware bin). For my other two i go through a 5lb bag ever week or so, they get a cup a day (two large bunnies). So i would say 50lbs would be a waste, even if you could freeze some. Mind you if u kept have and donated half to a shelter I know people who do that with bale of hay, as they cannot store a whole bale. I have a wood box that I store 1 to 2 bales in for my guys.

I thought about that, but there’s only one local shelter who even takes bunnies, and they only usually have one or two bunnies there per month, and they get adopted out fast.  So I don’t know if they could even use it up quick enough!

I was wondering the same. My mom just ‘surprised me with a 50 dollar 50 pond bag of rabbit food for my 4 pound lion head who eats 1/4-1/3 cup a day. I’ve read many times that the bags expire and now I have no way of returning it. What to do?

Hi Rina Z, I would freeze them in air tight containers, as suggested above.
