Hi Everyone! I know I havent been talking much lately, I have been so busy with the shop, and websites, and hanging out with Jersey… lol
I just wanted to share with you a rescue story that happened over the course of the last week, thought you might like to know
We have a take – away shop in South australia, where we live, and because we have cards of SA Rabbit Rescue on our counter, a fair few people have come in to talk about their rabbits
Which has been fantastic!
A lady came in about 6 months ago and told us about her female who had just had 2 litters, and the babies all had really bad fur mites. I went to visit them then, and she had 6 babies and wanted to get rid of the mother as well. The babies all found homes, and I was going to take the mum but she decided she wanted to keep her, and told us she was getting desexed, and we never heard from her again…. until now.
She came into the shop the other day really upset because her bunny had another 4 litters since then. I was asking her questions about the father etc, and it turns out that the dad is the mums brother. Anyhoo, she had one of the babies with her in the car. So she took me to have a look.
When I carried the baby into one of the other shops to have a look at him, he was doing this strange bobbing thing of his head. I thought it was strange, and then I looked at his eyes, and they are completely clear in where the black bit is meant to be, and at the back of the eyeball it looks very cloudy and strange. We had ostriches like this before who were blind, so I thought he must be blind… When Sally got to the shop (You guys remember her, shes the one who saved Stu-Bob, she visits the shop all the time) – she had a look at him too and said he may have tumours in his eyes and she checked his teeth and he has really bad malocclusion, spurs in his back molars, and an underbite at the front, so its a fairly bad problem apparently. If not looked after properly he would starve to death because of his teeth. Its most likely a genetic problem because of the inbreeding that was happening at this ladys house.
The woman took him home talking about having him put to sleep incase he is in pain. I rang her that night and asked her if I could come and get him, because I wanted to take him to the vet and see what the problem is, and she said ok.
The next night I went over to her house to pick up baby bunny and her children were absolutely running a riot with thise bunnies. She had mum there and the one I was taking and the kids were racing around with them and passing them around, and they were absolutely terrified. I had a look at mum rabbit, she has good teeth… The lady was talking about how she didnt know what to do with her because she couldnt afford to desex and all her babies had died and she was really upset . There were 2 babies left alive. The blind one I was taking, and another one that she had dropped off at a chain pet shop in our local shopping mall.
I turned mum upside down and was rubbing her tummy. This bunny wasnt in a good situation. I made a huge excuse up about her teeth and how she needed them checked because they were spurring and how her milk ducts seemed blocked (I know nothing about these things), and the lady said she didnt want to keep her anyway, and said I should take them both . I put them in the car and drove away as fast as I could… Gave mum a full check up when I got home and she seems good apart from one cloudy eye.
Then I remembered what I had heard about the baby at the pet shop. I was worried that if it was blind or had malocclusion it would be suffering in someones backyard hutch one day. I rang Jersey and asked her what to do, and she encouraged me to call the pet shop about the baby.
So I followed her advice, called them to let them know I was coming, and walked into the pet shop an hour later. The woman who owns the place wasnt very helpful, but the other staff were great. I mentioned the teeth and the blindness and a few other big words I have learned here over the years
and I walked out with the bunny. They let me have him! I only had to mention the RSPCA once. They were very good
Anyway, now I have 2 babies, and one mum going to the vet tomorrow for a full exam. I have had people tell me so far that blind baby should be put to sleep because being blind with bad teeth is too much for him to deal withm but Im gonna talk to the vet about the whole situation to see if he is in any pain. The Pet shop baby has bad teeth also but his eyes are fine, and he has already been adopted by the lady who took Squee so hes one happy bunny at the moment.
I havent been bothering mum and my baby too much because they are a bit skittish because of the kids they were with before. But here is a picture I took yesterday. Off to the vet tomorrow morning. Will keep you updated! ![]()
Mum and Jellybeans
Oh by the way, mum needs a name. Any ideas?
The poor bunnies! I’m glad you brought the mama with you, who knows how many more litters she would have had there
I hope the baby gets better, he can live more than happy as a blind bun with the right bunny slaves
That’s a sad story! How horrible that one lady’s irresponsibility makes so many unwanted baby bunnies. That’s a lot of litters for 1 bunny to have!
How wonderful of you to take them in! Mama is very pretty!
I would call her Fortuna or something similar that means “luck” since she really is!
Good luck at the vet!
What gorgeous buns. They are so blessed to be in your home now. Thanks for saving them from a horrible situation. I know a lady in the guinea pig world who has what is called a lethal. Blind, deaf and has really bad teeth problems. Her name is Fairy and with the regular tooth trims lives a fabulously spoiled life. I have a soft spot for handicapped animals.
Wow, lucky buns indeed! That’s so terrible how the lady was treating them
. It’s great of you to take them off her hands, but I just hope she doesn’t get any ideas in her head and gets more animals, since she got off “home free” this time.
Those poor things!! They are so lucky you came along and I’m so glad that poor momma won’t be having any more litters.
We are on the way to the vet now (I had to stop at the shop on the way to get some things so I thought I would update with a pic ![]()
This is Jellybeans, the blind one with the bad teeth. He is apparently 8 weeks old, we think older. Hes so lovely!!!!!
i would have to agree with the name fortuna! it is a very pretty name for a very pretty and lucky bunny!!! that &^$^$*%$%%%$%@$@%$^ woman and her kids! how could you do that and it be her own brother!!!! INBREEDING IS AGAINST THE LAW FOR A REASON AND SAME GENETIC LAWS THAT MAKE IT ILLEAGEL APPLY TO ANIMALS!!!!! GRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR >:@ >:@ >:@ >:@ >:@ >:@
JellyBean is a cutie! He looks pretty stylin’ riding in a Porsche!!!
Moosie is so be jealous of little Jellybeans in that car ![]()
Lol, I was driving that the other day when I saw JerseyGirl and she was teasing me about it.
Here is the update of what happened at the vet:
Jellybeans is a very rare bunny. He is 100% blind which is apparently quite uncommon because of the way that a rabbits eyes are structured. This is what the vet said, I dont know any more than this! We have to talk to an expert about it, but he is not in town at the moment. Jellybeans has 100% cataracts which may be affecting the optical nerve, so an operation may or may not enable him to see again. His teeth are bad, but can be filed down every 6 weeks if needed, no abscesses, and the vet will make provisions for a blind bunny to be kept in the hospital while his teeth are being operated on, provided he odenst go through too much stress initially. I am keeping Jellybeans because he is going to be high maitenance and he has settled in well.
Mummy Bunny is also blind, not 100%, but pretty close to it. Her teeth are great, she has milk problems because she has had so many litters but they should clear up in a few weeks. She is very stressed at the moment (understandable) and needs to find a forever home asap so that she can settle in and find love. The good news is I let her out for a run this morning too and she settled in really well, she has come out of her shell a lot in the last few days, but she needs a forever home so that she can settle in and just be herself
When she is out on the lawn she cant see anything, as I can approach her and pick her up and she doenst know I am there. But when I let her out of her cage she seems more relaxed. At my house unfortunately she cant be out all the time as we have 8 bunnies at the moment, but Jersey and I are working on finding her an awesome home ![]()
Other Baby is now called Bubbles. He has teeth issues the same as Jellybeans but he is not blind which is good news. He has settled into the Gift shop next to my shop and the lady there just adores him. He was very skittish but he will come up to her now for pets so he is doing well. He just needs lots of Hay (They hadnt had hay before)
So thats where we are at with the bunnies. I just uploaded a video and I will share the video with you guys of the romp on the lawn this morning ![]()
I cant upload my other pics at the moment because I cant resize them on this computer (at the shop) so Ill put them on Facebook and see if someone can help me get them here
Please ![]()
omg that poor little bunny! is he blind due to imbreeding? sooo glad you are going to give him a forever home!!!!
Aww hes so happy! He does pretty well for being blind!
Aww! I am going to call him Binkybean!

These latest pictures are the Mamma.
She looks in good knick considering everything. Kafrn, I can see that 3rd eyelid more in these pictures. You would never guess Jellybeans is blind from the way he was moving around. I guess he’s never known anything different.
You’ll have to try get us some pics of Bubbles. Great name to go with Squee! Bubble & Squee-k : )
Regarding inbreeding…it’s not uncommon with rabbits and other animals I think but usually it’s managed and responsible breeders will not breed rabbits with genetic defects. In this situation, they were pets and who knows exactly who bred with who. These sort of conditions (especially dental malocclusions) are commonly attributed to genetics. I’d say it’s pretty likely the inbreeding has been responsible for these rabbits conditions and why majority of the last litter died.
But that’s over. This Mama won’t be having any more.
Momma bunny is so beautiful!!!!
I agree!
So name suggestions: I was thinking J names to go JellyBeans
Jubey Jubes
Jessamine
Jessamay etc
But now I’m thinking the name Maia. “Maia is mainly remembered as the goddess of spring and rebirth, she makes the lush green grass and the fragrant flowers grow again”~goddess.com.au It’s said the month of May is named after her. I like the symbolism of new beginnings. Name also has connotations of Mother and Nuturer.
Beautiful bunnies!! They are so lucky to have found you. I hope mama finds a great home soon.
Maia it is !!! It suits her beautifully!!
Hey Maia is my name, spelled wrong! That’s OK I approve
Luckily your path crossed with theirs! I wish I had the space/money to help out more than one bunny…
I love that name. Very pretty.
Playing “catch up”. I didn’t realise you went with the name Maia. : ) I shouldn’t be surprised as you like days of the week for names so why not names of the months. Hope to meet them, and Bubbles, Squee, Remy, Rocket, Mr Bunny, Sparrow, Rabz and see Stubob again. Did I miss anybun?
