It’s that time of year again. Bunnies are everywhere you look. While it’s enjoyable for us bunny lovers to see cute bunny stuff all over, it also brings out the irresponsibility of so many people. What are you doing this year to help spread the word that Rabbits are not Toys and Should not be bought as a gift for a child?

Every year, about this time, people start thinking about getting their child, girlfriend, etc. a bunny for Easter. Easter is on April 8 so now’s the time to act. I will be spending my weekend putting flyers all over town. I also usually put an ad on my local online free classified site. You can also spread the word via Facebook, Twitter, blogs, anything that lots of people will see.

Here are some great sites for more info and some great flyers to print

        http://www.rabbit.org/easter/flyer/index.html

        makeminechocolate.org

        rabbitron.com

I don’t know how many people will change their minds upon seeing my flyers, but if they save even one bunny from becoming an Easter bunny reject, it will be all worthwile for me.

I plan to put up flyers at all pet stores (including ones that sell rabbits, of course, they always take them down but if a couple of people see it, it’s worth it) and at my vet. A great idea is to carry several flyers in your purse, jacket pocket, whatever, along with a couple of tacks and whevever you come across a bulletin board at the grocery store or wherever, post one up.

        ‘Twas the Night Before Easter

‘Twas the night before Easter, and all through the house
Not a creature was stirring, not even a mouse.
The baskets were ready for eggs they would find
Hidden by the Easter Bunny so cute and so kind.

The children were nestled all snug in their beds
With no thought of their bunny who hadn’t been fed.
With Ma in her ‘kerchief, and I in my cap
We knew he was hungry but we needed a nap.

When out on the lawn there arose such a clatter
I sprang from the bed to see what was the matter.
When, what to my wondering eyes should appear
But the Easter Bunny – with eyes full of tears.

He un-caged the rabbit, once lively and quick,
Last year’s Easter Gift, now lonely and sick.
More rapid than eagles he called the bunn’s name
And with a few binkies, the bunny happily came.

“You poor little soul, so sad and alone,
With no one to love you in this so-called home.
How quickly they forgot about your joys and your needs.
Come with me, Little One, come with me please.

Run with me, Bunny, stretch your legs tall!
Let’s find you a home where you’ll be loved by all.”
The Easter Bunny left no chocolates that year
But he certainly made one thing quite clear.

The gift of a rabbit is not just for the season,
We had gotten the bunny for all the wrong reasons.
“A bunny would make a great gift!” was our thought
But there was one important thing we forgot.

A bunny should be family, and loved just as much,
Not locked in a cage and denied human touch.
They need more than a name, a pat and a meal,
They need companionship and love that is real.

And I heard him exclaim as he dashed out of sight
“You weren’t given a gift! You were given a LIFE!”

This is awesome LPT! I was just thinking last night about getting started on this as well. There are 3 ads up on my local kijiji already about people selling baby “Easter bunnies”. Once our slim fit program ends at work i’m going to set up a display in reception about proper small animal care, etc. So I would appreciate any links to good info

I keep posting things on facebook about this issue. Its my way of not directly confronting my sister in law about this. She wanted to get my nephew (who is a year and half old) a bunny for easter.   I was so  upset when she said that and tried telling her how much work it is and you cant put them outside. I really feel that if she went through and got one they would let it go in the wild in a few months, and I have seen first hand what happens when people do that to their bunnies  I’m going to start putting up some flyers too, and my sister works at a pet store and I have making sure that her pet store educates people on bunnies before they buy them, and they actually do a very good job of it. Love that Easter Poem too so cute!!

Ironically, I start campaigning yesterday. Got Rabbitron permission to use some of their pics as my facebook photo, cover and profile and I plan on printing a flyer for my vet office. I’m really tempted to put one up at the petstore in town that always sells bunnies. Maybe I’ll sneak one of makeminechocolate’s business cards on the board. Being smaller, they might not catch it and it’ll stay up

I love this time of year because of spring and all the awesome bunny decorations but I dread knowing that it is the worst time of year for actual rabbits

I’m pretty sure all the people I have friended on facebook already know me as “that bunny girl” (lol), but I was planning to spend some time designing a cover pic this week for the purpose. If it turns out okay I’ll try to post it on here so people can use it too.

I’ve also put up flyers around my school and local coffee shops for bunny awareness .

Locally, there is little to be done for rabbits. Every time the topic comes up, it is disgust that people show for having them as pets. Every single person that I have discussed rabbits with, or heard discussing rabbits, finds killing them via abuse funny. Boyfriend has mentioned our bunny to people when we buy veggies, restaurant workers, etc and afterwards I always just want to leave the business and never go back because every single one of them has an abuse story to share that they find funny that they did. Even going out to dinner I have to randomly hear of abuse of rabbits from the people at the next table sometimes. It’s to the point there are few places in the city I even want to step foot in. It’s a smallish town, so always the same people serving us, I pretty much only go out to three places anymore… all chains 40 miles away.

I will share on facebook, G+ and care2 though. Lots more caring people in other parts of the country!

I know this sounds odd, but have you asked her if you could bring your bunny over for a few hours instead? Back when I was a child (we had outside bunnies that weren’t kept in hutches but were free roam on the ground in a large colony) my parents would bring in one or two of our rabbits for Easter. The few hours of (supervised) abuse that your bunny might suffer are a lot better than what a permanent (probably baby) bunny they buy would have to go through. That way she can get some picture of her son with a bunny (which is I am sure the main motivation for her wanting one), and her son will forget about the rabbit within 5 minutes.
Or at the very least, you could offer a list of rescues she can go to after she royally effs this up.

Well my nephew always likes to pet Molly whenever they are visiting my house. But he is only interested for maybe 5 minutes before he goes off trying to pick soemthing else up. If she is still serious about getting a bunny I will offer to educate and let them really see what its like to take care of Molly. I just know that if they end up not wanting it I would take it off their hands, but I really don’t have the room for another rabbit right now anyway…sigh…I really hope she doesnt get one. Its just too sad.

How about a trial owning a rabbit? Like, you could let them rabbit sit Molly for a week (under your supervision, you go check to make sure Molly isn’t being neglected and has food/water etc daily) and let them see how much work a rabbit really is?

Oh boy thats scary!! lol but in all honesty it sounds like a great idea! I’m not positive she is still planning on getting one…she just had a new baby via C-section so she isn’t getting around too well as it is right now, so she may not even feel like getting a rabbit this easter (lets hope not!!)

the easter bunny in the poem let those parents off too easy. it should’ve been,

“He un-caged the rabbit, once lively and quick,
then kicked ma in the face, and me in the dick”

Rei, yeah I wouldn’t do it if you think the boy would hurt her and be rough, but if you think they wouldn’t hurt her then might be a good experiment for them. And if you visit daily she can get proper care even if they won’t do it, then they can see how much work a bun is.

I used to love Easter…now I’m dreading it. So many people breed rabbits and other animals carelessly up here thinking only of quick profit.

                                                IT DRIVE ME NUTS!!!!

I don’t get insane stories like that very often now, but when they are finished blabbing, I ask them politely “did you know rabbits can be spayed and neutered?” and they look at me like ….

I’m on instagram and there is a person that has 2 rabbits. they are both siblings, and they are 3 months of age. she said that the boy has began his ‘advances’ on the girl. She is a part of a group that I joined (another instagram member made a bunny group) and I posted that she needs to seperate them, asap. Some people just ‘don’t listen.’ it just takes a few seconds and BAM, you’ve got a pregnant rabbit and are freaking out.

Frankie, I know the lady that runs Rabbitron!  she has a bunch of bunnies that she takes care of. She offered me an opportunity to take care of all of them this summer so she can go on vacation, but I dont have a car

yesterday, i received an annual newsletter from the humane society. in 2011, the shelter received 191 rabbits, 177 were adopted

And I think she is amazing for rescuing all those rabbits. I idolize people who have the finances to do that. And wouldn’t that be awesome watching all those bunnies?! (ok ya, it’d be a lot of work but also a lot of cute!) I’d lend you my car if I was closer

I dont understand how and why people think a living bearthing feeling animal is a present!!! They are a life long commitment!!!!! I dislike Christmas because a puppy or kitten is soooo cute in the box under the tree… I dont like Easter cause not only do people think bunnies, ducklings and chicks are cute but goats too and then when the cute wheres offer we will just let it go, take it to the pound, let it sit and the cage anddo the bare mimium or worse hurt the poor animal….

I tried to post on craigslist but I don’t think it was a very well liked post, cause it didn’t last long. lol

So while there probably are limits, I have yet to reach them based on the limited work in graphic design I do in my school’s art program. I would probably have noticed more if I was a Digital Medium major (or whatever they call it here), but since I am Museum Studies/Teaching I am more of a “jack of all trades, master of none.” Plus I am not going to pretend for a minute that once I actually am a teacher my students are going to have access to Photoshop.

My aunt just bought my 5 year old cousin a 12 week old lion head hot-tot mix bunny. He’s freaking 5!!! >_< She works constantly, and her husband just got deployed to Afghanistan. I tried talking her out of it, tried directing her to THIS site in particular because of how much useful information is here. She said she was busy and couldn't take at the moment… I told her to make sure to call me when she got the chance. Haven't heard a peep and have tried calling her numerous times since with no answer. She's feeding him the food with the dried fruit and seeds in it because the SHELTER told her it was ok for them. My little cousin wanted a bunny so his could come over and have play dates with mine and she didn't even try to explain to him that that's not possible!

I want to go over there and steal him from her. Especially since they just got rid of their rag doll cat because her son didn’t like it anymore and supposedly the cat attacked him. Well of course the damn cat is going to attack him if he doesn’t like it because animals know when you don’t like them!

Ugh!!! Sorry, touchy subject at the moment, and I’m done ranting.

Some people’s kids! I built my buns a christmas tree out of parsley poked into cardboard I knew was safe for them to chew on and made them a garland out of fruits and veggies, they were so distracted by the goodies they didn’t even eat the string it was strung on! Hooray for proper bunny decorations!

There are a lot more poster options this year. I’ve seen about a dozen great ones on Facebook via rabbit advocate pages. I always repost them to my page.

It is terribly frustrating. I think we all know of at least one person who bought a pet rabbit for their child.

I went to my vet yesterday and I was overjoyed to see they declared March “Small Animal Month” and they have a big board set up detailing nutrition and care for rabbits, guinea pigs and small rodents (including debunking myths and what NOT to feed). They also have a big display of quality food and treats for purchase. My vet is a rabbit lover and I love her for that.

I hope they leave them up. I wouldn’t be surprised if a bunny breeder takes them down. I will probably check the stores again before Easter.

This weekend I am going to get some colorful blankets for “the Pablo king”. I could hang some there. They keep them up too. (most of the time)
