I have a just-turned-one year old neutered male Flemish Giant, Boris. We let him out of his condo every day for exercise/fun/socialization and he has access to basically 2 big rooms — living room and dining/kitchen. We also have 2 female goldendoodles.
The dining room isn’t used often and has become his hangout den. Potty-wise, he behaves perfectly over there. No accidents. No poop, no pee.
However, in the living room, we have a shaggy rug. We also have a second litter box right in front of the couch, which was his favorite pee spot. So we put the litter box there with hay in it. He’s pretty good about going in there and eating the hay. Whenever he goes in the litter box, I will give him a treat and tell him he’s good (especially when he pees in there).
But! He turds it up on the carpet! Constantly. Piles, one-offs, everything. Which isn’t a huge deal, since it’s easy to pick up. Also, the dogs spend a lot of time on the carpet too… so I’m thinking he might be trying to make it his? Even though he’s neutered? Still, would love it if he DIDN’T do that — any thoughts?
My main question is peeing. He will be SO GOOD for a month or so… so that we think he has grown out of it or is trustworthy, and then he will pee on the carpet. Usually right near his litter box, so there’s no excuse of why he couldn’t have gone in there. This is extremely frustrating! Any advice is greatly appreciated!!!
