prince dorian the bun replied to the topic What is your bun's favorite "forbidden fruit"? in the forum THE LOUNGE 4 years, 8 months ago

Thanks Bam! I did end up doing some research and saw humans could eat them and make a tea out of the leaves, so was wondering about my original info that they were bad for buns. This will make life much easier when summer hits and it’s chasing bun chasing leaves ๐Ÿ˜€ . Dorian isn’t a big stick chewer, so he probably won’t even be interested… he…[Read more]

I was thinking the same, though they get restless in the small space after a while so may not be able to increase to more than an hour, maybe hour and a half.ย  I do agree since it seems to be working just keep it up and feel out when they are ready to move on!

That is sounding like a huge improvement! I would just keep doing exactly what you have been! I think you’ll have a good sense of when they are ready for the next step. No harm in taking things slowly. I’d probably increase the length of sessions before moving to a new spot.

So far nothing jinxed! I’m still only doing 30-50 min in the small ottoman. It seems like they are improving at a snails pace.. Maxwell has groomed Ruby 3 out of the last 4 sessions I believe, and he will for a pretty long time. She doesn’t groom him much, but there is a little cuddling too.ย  Yesterday after he groomed her a long time she still…[Read more]

    I’m glad he’s improved a bit again.

Another thing you might try (run by your vet of course) are dried greens and herbs. Some bunnies cannot tolerate fresh greens, but do well with dried greens. You can get dried dandelion and some other greens online, and many people will dried herbs and veggies themselves for their bunnies. Some bunnies also…[Read more]

I agree DanaNM. He is eating a very good amount of hay. His poop is formed but soft and water is leaking where he sits.

I have had him on only hay for 48 hours, still had soft stool but there was an improvement,ย  and then I saw he got a little lethargic and I reintroduced critical care. Otherwise, he is ok, not very playful but active and…[Read more]

I have much the same experience as Dana, the buns I’ve had that needed scent gland cleaning have been elderbuns.

It might very well be that your bun’s scent glands are pristine, sunce she is young and agile. It’s still good to add them to the routine once-over check list.

I’ve only ever had to do them on my senior bun that was a larger breed and was having trouble reaching them once she started having some arthritis. Even in her case, I only ever had to do them a couple times. I noticed she was getting a little smelly, but they didn’t seem to be causing her any discomfort. My other senior is soooo squirrelly during…[Read more]

That’s great you were able to see a trusted vet! It makes a world of difference. And a pain-related cause makes perfect sense with her symptoms. Hopefully she will start improving with better pain management.

Thank you for this update! I’m glad you have a great rabbit vet!

It sounds promising that you have found a possible root cause for this. Rabbits are sensitive to pain. The fact that her behaviour changes as the pain meds wear off is a pretty solid indication that there is a pain problem. Luckily rabbits do very well on meloxicam even for longer term use.

Ahh okay I wanted to know if every bunny needs cleaning as this is not a common topic in bunny world as I haven’t seen many questions about that.

Yep, i have seen the video already ๐Ÿ™‚ okay so then I will check my rabbits glands in two weeks when I trim her nails.

Can it be uncomfortable for her If there is a built up in her scent glands? She…[Read more]

I think it can wait 2 weeks. Some buns never need their scent glands cleaned, some need them cleaned now and again. It’s not difficult, but its easiest if someone can hold the bun while you do the cleaning.

Perhaps you’ve already seen this HowCast video with Mary S Cotter, but in case you havent, here is the…[Read more]

Thank you all for the replies, I decided to take her back to her emergency vet because she was in pain, they have the most wonderful rabbit savvy vet there that got her through her first GI back in October (the werenโ€™t available when this emergency came up). After she did a thorough examination she did say that my bun was still dehydrated but s…[Read more]

Hi, i just came across this topic in one of bunny pages. How often do you clean your buns scent glands?

My bun is one year old and i have never had a look on those ๐Ÿ™ I didn’t know, i feel bad for that.

Can i wait and check them when I clip her nails in like two weeks as she hates being picked up. Can this wait If they have never been cleaned?

Pics ending in 315 and 452 look like urine pooled near the poop! So don’t worry about those. The others seem like they are just a bit more wet than they should be (so they are staining the fabric a bit), but they are formed which is good.

I agree the poops don’t look great. But they also don’t look completely awful (they are formed). Is he…[Read more]

Yes, my buns have 20 sq. ft. It would not be really ideal to have them in anything smaller unless they were getting 3 or 4 or 5 hours of playtime every single day.
