This time of year even neutered buns can becime a bit hormonal. It’s due to the increase in amount of daylight that occurs this time of year. Light sends a signal to the pineal gland, which stimulates the release of sex hormones and inhibits the secretion of melatonin (sleep hormone). The adrenal glands can release testosterone in both female and…[Read more]

I agree with the others. That was WAY too much carrot to give. Not because it was turning your bunny’s pee orange (rabbit pee can be lots of colors), but because carrots have a lot of starch and it isn’t good for them to eat large quantities.

I would not be overly worried about your bunny not drinking a lot of water. Always provide it, of course.…[Read more]

I agree. Hand feeding is fine and will help you gain her trust. I would hold off on trying to pet her while eating. Play a little harder to get. If you aren’t trying to pet her every time she is eating, she will stop being so wary and thinking you might pick her up.

oh okay thank you! I also had another question just out of curiosity, does you bunny ever poop in their sleep? I noticed sometimes my bun will be sleeping and then get up and there’s one or two poops under him! It’s easy to clean up so it’s not a big deal I just found it funny

Please do not feed your rabbit entire carrots in a day — carrots are treats as Bam mentions, so at most, a thumb-sized portion of a carrot every couple days is much more healthy and appropriate for a rabbit’s overall diet: https://wabbitwiki.com/wiki/Treats

I wouldn’t be concerned about the presence of orange pee since, as Bam mentions, that is…[Read more]

I also think you have a fine approach, paired with Dana’s mention of petting during eating — you want your presence to be associated with security, as opposed to consistent action/reaching towards the rabbit, so positive passive association can be very powerful in building trust with a rabbit.

If you suspect a rabbit has an association that…[Read more]

Wabbitwiki cites “30% to 70% relative humidity” being ideal, but generally speaking, you want to be extra mindful that high humidity definitely contributes to heat and air circulation. I would definitely prioritize keeping the temperature in a comfortable range and promoting air flow when possible.

Rabbit pee comes in a variety of colors, ranging from light yellow to reddish brown. Orange and red urine as a rule comes from carotenoids in the diet – it’s the same pigment that gives carrots their color. This is completely normal. A rabbit can also spontaneously produce orange or red pee, and it’s still normal.

It’s wise to only feed carrot…[Read more]

    Hi Good morning.

So I’ve been noticing that my rabbit is not really drinking water. So Before I was giving him a lot of carrot by that I mean 1 full carrot in cut it in thick portions and maybe half of another one. I work full time and I wanted to make sure he had plenty for the whole day + his pebbles +water. Then, one day I noticed that his pee…[Read more]

Fingers crossed it will help! I have never used Emeraid, only Critical Care (Oxbow). It seems Emeraid comes in both an intensive care formula and a maintenance formula. It sounds like good stuff though, and if it’s anything like like Oxbow Critical Care, feeding it for two weeks shouldn’t be a problem.

    I don’t give rabbit probiotics routinely…[Read more]

DanaNM replied to the topic Should I Neuter My Single Boy Bun Who Is Not Displaying Any Hormonal Behavior in the forum HOUSE RABBIT Q & A 4 years, 5 months ago

If he isn’t showing any behavioral issues (lucky you!), the main reason to neuter would be in case you ever want to bond him with another rabbit in the future. If you think there’s a chance of future bonding, then neutering now would be a good idea.

Issues might pop up in the future as well. Sometimes if the bun is older when neutered, they are…[Read more]

I think that sounds like a fine strategy! She always has hay available, so it’s not as though she has to come to you to eat anything, just her pellets (and salad?). The only thing is I wouldn’t force the petting all the time while she’s eating. You could use the time while she’s eating to brush her too. It would be good to just pet little bits,…[Read more]

Addition: when I adopted her, all they could tell me was that she “was in a foster home with two kids, so she’s pretty used to being picked up.” I don’t pick up my bunnies unless absolutely necessary, and my working theory is that the kids would lure her in with treats just to pick her up. She’s okay with her face being touched, but does the dine-…[Read more]

Hi! This is my first post so I apologize in advance for any mistakes! Anyway, I have an 8 month old Holland Lop single boy. He is overdue for neutering and I booked him in for neutering next week. However, I am having second thoughts now as he is still using his litter box diligently and is not showing signs of aggression or mounting me. He is…[Read more]

    Good morning!

It seems I’ e been all around this forum lately, and I’ve really appreciated all the advice that everyone has been giving! Anyway, I adopted a second bun a couple of days ago and named her Tess. While I didn’t get much information about her, I’ve noticed a couple prominent traits of hers, mainly her skittishness. She seems to WANT…[Read more]
