BouncyBunBuns started the topic Advice needed: Elderbun not eating in the forum DIET & CARE 4 years, 2 months ago

Hi all, in a last ditch effort to find some answers – I’d appreciate any advice. My elderbun Quinn (10.5 yrs), has just completely stopped eating greens or her pellets. She’ll nibble hay here and there, and she’s drinking water. I am sure most of you are immediately thinking stasis, and so was I. 3 weeks and 4 vet visits ago. She’s been to a rabbi…[Read more]

Glad they calmed down! I agree it’s so weird that soooo many places recommend small spaces. Small has never worked for my rabbits!

Thank you! I tried expanding the space and cleaning up and for now they are just ignoring each other and resting. They’re both usually VERY sleepy during the day, especially Bodhi- he goes into full REM, flops, and twitches while he sleeps lol, so I’m wondering if yesterday they were too tired to work out their issues and saved it all for night.

I actually just expanded the pen after cleaning everything up. I agree I think they need the extra space too. It’s hard because all of the forums and pages I’ve looked at and probably 95% of them recommend using the small pen, so I keep thinking that’s the right way. Now, they’re relaxing and ignoring each other.

Just as an updated, I took Bun for his check up today and the vet didn’t believe me when i said he was 13. LOL

Like I think they really thought I was lying or misinformed. I had to say, no really, I have his records going way back from the shelter! Sadly they said the average rabbit lifespan around here is closer to 5 or 6. 🙁

    I actually didn’t…[Read more]

I think you should expand the space (to at least an x-pen, preferably 2 x-pens). Consistent fighting for that long means that something isn’t working.

As an aside, small space methods like this are also known as “flooding”, which is now considered inhumane by many animal welfare groups. They sometimes work, but it’s because the animal becomes so…[Read more]

While negative in terms of the relationship, this is the reason why these long sessions are needed to have an understanding if the current dynamic between them is stable. Though this may seem like a step back, I consider it a step forward in the communication of the relationship between them. Rabbits who just ignore each other during long dates…[Read more]

They were amazing until 11 hours last night and then all hell suddenly broke loose after Salem started humping Bodhi. It’s been about 12 hours now of fighting with breaks of 1-2 hours in between if I’m lucky :(. They aren’t snuggling anymore and just ignoring each other when they aren’t biting. Both of them seem really tense.

Our bunnies love their “dais”: it’s a little platform in their hutch so they can look over the edges of the hutch.Thedesign is very simple: take a cardboard or wooden box, cover it with something soft and hang a cloth over it to give them cover from above.

I covered a cardboard box with a soft faux sheepskin, and it’s become prime real estate…[Read more]

And yes sometimes there can be weird poops after a GI episode due to the meds and everything, it’s just great that he’s pooping!

Ellie from The Netherlands replied to the topic Recommendation for a carrier for two buns in the forum HABITATS AND TOYS 4 years, 2 months ago

How big are your buns? I got a wonderful carrier bag for Sinterklaas: it has a sturdy bottom but a semi flexible top, and there are 4 different zippers.

One side opens fully, the other side opens halfway like a barn door, there’s a zipper that opens the whole top, and a small zipper in a side panel so you can stick your hand through to pet your…[Read more]

Gaah, how did I miss this? Sorry!

Of course it’s stressful when you’re bunny isn’t well. I can barely sleep when one of my fluffbutts is ill, I just want to check on them al the time and to make them comfortable in any way.

Glad that they found a cause for his troubles and that it’s something relatively minor. Wishing him a safe surgery and a…[Read more]

Glad you took him in! That sounds like a good plan for his mobility.

In terms of the vaccine, it’s hard to say. It’s so new that they really haven’t done the studies to see how much immunity wanes and what the range of windows can be between the first shot and the booster.

There’s this webinar from medgene that goes over a lot of those…[Read more]

As I directly mention, a rabbit needs to be on pellets if veggie selection is not being done in an intentional way (i.e., looking at the nutritional values of each and discerning daily quantities from there). The link I provided gives resources on examples of cases of pellet-free diets, including this:…[Read more]

Ellie from The Netherlands replied to the topic Cheaper bunny litter? in the forum DIET & CARE 4 years, 2 months ago

Yes, we use wooden kitty litter pellets too, topped with a layer of hay so they won’t stand in any wetness.

These pellets are dirt cheap and you’d don’t need much of it: I only put it in the corners where they pee. Even though I change the boxes daily a 5 kg bag lasts me almost 2 months, costing about €4.

CutieMoosh replied to the topic How do you know if a bunny is just letting out regular calcium? in the forum HOUSE RABBIT Q & A 4 years, 2 months ago

Thank you for your comment, but pellets aren’t necessary for bunnies. I’ve already found dried foods make him gassy, which is why I don’t give him much of it. Pellets technically don’t have good nutritional value since it’s just compressed timothy hay with preservatives.  The only bunnies who need pellets are babies, adult bunnies don’t need…[Read more]

Kiln dried pine pellets are safe, which is what people refer to in the rabbit community.
