Yeah we are going to try a different antibiotic. We’re looking into options to decide our best approach, now that we’re armed with the knowledge that it is definitely EC (before he thought he might potentially have something else going on causing the hind limb weakness, but I’ve believed it to be EC all along).

    His mobility isn’t a concern…[Read more]

I’m glad you got confirmation and you are continuing to see improvement. As for the URI, would the vet agree to trying a different antibiotic?

Thank you for providing additional information! As the others said, treatment can take time. Sometimes it will be weeks before you see improvement. Oddly though, how quickly you see improvement does not appear to be related to severity of symptoms. Every bunny is different. I would suggest asking your vet about their choice of medication. While…[Read more]

Having another unbonded rabbit near them (or in view) could also be part of the problem. If she’s within their view, you might try blocking their view of her pen by clipping some towels or blankets to the pen walls.

For regular daily transportation, you might consider training her to go into her carrier. That way you can safely move her from the garden to the house.

TBH A vet should be able to handle a rabbit that doesn’t like to be held. In my experience a lot of it is about the technique of the handler and less about the rabbit itself.  I have a few buns…[Read more]

Oh wow, yes I think getting a second opinion will be very good!

Oh I don’t have any boxes right now so hidey houses is the only answer lol. We have a whole elaborate system since the other rabbit isn’t bonded where they take turns going out to play in the rest of the house then going back home. During the day whoever is at home gets access to both condos and yards, and whoever is out playing gets the entire…[Read more]

Their set up looks very nice! The only thing to maybe add would be more room to gallop around for a bit for a (short-ish) period of time per day, preferably in the later part of the evening or in the (earlier bit of) morning. As you know buns tend to mostly lounge during daytime.

You dont need to go out and buy hideyhouses, unless you absolutely…[Read more]

These are more good points. I couldn’t upload an image so here is a link to their setup. The boys are napping nicely together right now. At night they stay in the 2 story condo plus their front yard and a 2nd barrier goes up and Clover stays on the right side. I’ll go to Petco when it opens and see if they have any more hidey houses and add more…[Read more]

Phew! I was hoping I didn’t have to feed her through the night haha. And yes the syringe feeding is definitely a stressor for us both. Her first seizure was caused by stress so I try my hardest to make the process quick but stress free which is extremely difficult. I’m going to try some other recovery foods like others suggested, it would be a hug…[Read more]

I will definitely try a different recovery food! I’ll be calling the vet shortly about the fenbendazole and calling another vet for a second opinion. I do not trust this vet, they never even told me she had pneumonia until a few days after her X-rays. Said they didn’t mention it because they figured they just looked like old rabbit lungs. They als…[Read more]

My sense is that they probably need more time, and possibly a slightly slower approach. Did you give Winnie some time to settle-in at home before starting bonding?

I’ve had experience where the new bun is more scared and reactive, and it led to a very tenuous bond that eventually broke. What can happen is the scared bun starts behaving…[Read more]

    So stressful!

What is their set-up like overnight? I’m wondering if instead of fully separating, you could give them more space and lots of hiding spots so Wally can get away from Ben if needed.

You could also try doing some “couples therapy” bonding sessions by taking them to a neutral area and maybe doing some light stressing to see if that…[Read more]

It’s great that you dont feed her during the night! My very rabbit savvy vet is adamant that buns need to rest during the night. Syringe feeding is vital for a bun that won’t eat enough itself, but the process of picking the bun up, restraining it and more or less using force in order to get it to eat is still a stressor. Getting the nights off is…[Read more]

I’m so sorry you are going through this. I agree with the others, regarding fenbendazole and 1 week being a short time! Also double check your fenbendazole dosage, I had a past vet that underdosed it.

Giving her the night off feeding is fine. You might try the brand Emeraid (the herbivore sustain version) instead of Critical Care. My bun loved…[Read more]

Ok that makes me feel a bit better because she was thumping and trying to run away yesterday during her feeding, she’s definitely lively during that. My bun used to be a little over 4 lbs but she lost a lot of weight and is down to about 3.6 lbs I can feel her ribs she just feels like a skeleton. Thank you so much for the info. I’ve been fee…[Read more]

Wow that’s such a great answer. I have blackout curtains on the front window because it gets direct sunlight but I’ve had the back curtains open for the last month or so. I’ll try closing them and see if that helps at all. It also has been warmer than I keep it in winter but not by a lot. Looking at the weather, it’s going to be mid 80s 2 days…[Read more]

Blood tests results are back and no surprises, he levels were off the charts positive for active EC infection.

I might get treating his companion as a precaution and treat them regularly as a precaution too going forward now that it is confirmed he definitely has it.

thankfully, he’s doing great otherwise but now treating his URI just got a w…[Read more]

Sex hormones are not the only hormones that are affected by the increase in amount of daylight that occurs in spring. Plus, buns and humans, both male and female, have some testosterone production in their adrenal glands, and this production persists or gets exacerbated by castration. An increase in amount of daylight causes a decrease in…[Read more]
