DanaNM replied to the topic Dealing with Death if Bonded Rabbit in the forum DIET & CARE 6 years ago

Oh wow! Sorry for the delay in responding to this, was away on a trip.

How are things going now? Are you planning to bond or just foster?

In either case, you should not allow interaction in in Ralph’s main area. It’s also a good idea to let her settle in with no interactions with Ralph for about a week or more. Then if you want to bond them, you…[Read more]

DanaNM replied to the topic Different hay brands? in the forum DIET & CARE 6 years ago

If you have a rescue in your region, you might ask them they sell hay. Many will buy whole bales and sell it in smaller amounts. It is usually much cheaper than pet stores and fresher!

Oh my god, that so so awful about the cat. I’m glad you rescued her. That’s no way for a cat to live. ): I hope it goes well with the bunny!

DanaNM replied to the topic Lingering territorial poop smell… or scent gland cleaning time? in the forum DIET & CARE 6 years ago

I only had to do Bertha’s glands a few times in her life, and I did start to notice a funky smell when they needed to be done! Like an oniony skunk!

DanaNM replied to the topic Gi stasis, brown mucus and growth on lip in the forum DIET & CARE 6 years ago

It definitely looks like her gut is irritated with all of that mucous.

I had a foster bun that had these alternating cycles of extreme gas followed by these gross mucous-y poops. In his case, the vet diagnosed him with cecal dysbiosis, but we never really got to a cause or cure. His treatment was pain meds and cisapride to keep him from going…[Read more]

DanaNM replied to the topic Does anyone have advice about moving with a rabbit? in the forum DIET & CARE 6 years ago

You could just do a very thick fluffly layer of hay, maybe with some newspaper under it if you are worried she will eat the pee pads.

My experience with bottles in cars is that they just leak all over the place. Prob would be best to just offer her the bowl during some breaks every couple hours.

Just to give you some comfort, I had to drive 5.5…[Read more]

@Louiethebunny That is a really good price. A lot of vets are charging a lot more. I also know of a lot of people driving an hour or more to get their buns vaccinated. It is a tough call to drive that far but it seems like most bunnies are handling it very well!

DanaNM replied to the topic Playtime Area in the forum THE LOUNGE 6 years ago

Hardware stores are a good place to look for big litter boxes. They usually have an assortment of storage bins, or if you need a really huge one, concrete mixing tubs are great for big bunnies and bonded pairs.

My buns also really like tunnels, cardboard cat scratchers, and willow baskets/wreaths. The “barrel roller” toy is also very popular with…[Read more]

DanaNM replied to the topic Food aggression in rabbits in the forum BEHAVIOR 6 years ago

Scatter -feeding pellets (instead of using bowls) can help with the pellet squabbles. As for the treats, I usually try to have one in each hand and feed my pair the treats at the exact same moment. It would prob be good to only give treats in an open area so the don’t get upset in a confined space.

DanaNM replied to the topic Why is my Medically Healthy Rabbit not Eating or Pooping? in the forum BEHAVIOR 6 years ago

Greens have a lot of water but not much fiber, so that could explain the lower poop output… You are right to keep up the critical care if she isn’t eating hay or pellet mush on her own, because it will add the needed fiber and bulk to her diet. That’s awesome she ate a hay cookie!

DanaNM replied to the topic Can anyone recommend if any of these products are a suitable replacement for hay in the forum DIET & CARE 6 years ago

Yes Orchard is just as good, so hopefully that works out. Any grass hay would be suitable (oat and rye are other options).

Sorry no one has responded to this yet!

I don’t have too much personal experience with this, but there was a bun at the rescue I volunteer at that couldn’t really use one of his back hind legs. It seemed like it had broken in the past and not been set properly, so it just kind of stuck out to the side and didn’t help him hop at all. He seemed…[Read more]

    How is she doing now?

You mentioned a temp change, is she molting heavily?

I can’t remember if you’ve already addressed this, but has she had a dental exam? Molar spurs, even tiny ones, can cause enough pain to cause stasis. There is a feedback between pain and stasis. Pain causes stasis, which causes more pain, etc.

Moonlightbunny66 replied to the topic Chewing at night in the forum HOUSE RABBIT Q & A 6 years ago

@DanaNM LOL bunnies can definitely be bossy! Ear plugs are a good idea but I always wear headphones at night so I can watch and listen to stuff while I fall asleep. You’d think that would drown out the noise but nope! I’ve ended up just taking out Pinky’s hidey house and log house. He mostly just sits and poops on top of that house anyway lol.…[Read more]
