Bam replied to the topic Suspected fur mites – how to get rid? in the forum DIET & CARE 5 years, 7 months ago
Fur mites are common in rabbits, but its not something we do routine treatment to prevent. The bun as a rule gets the mites from the mother, and the mites then coexist with the bun, in numbers so low that they don’t cause any problem. The bun’s immune defense keeps the numbers low.
Young buns (and humans and dogs etc) don’t have a mature immune…[Read more]

Sometimes I think they don’t mind the face mounting because they don’t realize they are being mounted, and just think they are being groomed! But the issue is if they then realize they are being mounted and bite some sensitive areas…!
Can you try working with them in a larger space? Sometimes that helps them run away from the mounting attempts…[Read more]

I’ve heard that some spontaneous regeneration of the lens can occur. So you are correct, they may still have some vision. At the very least, they will be able to distinguish between light and dark, probably some shadows, etc.
EC is treated with Panacur (fenbendazole), which is a dewormer. It’s very inexpensive so a lot of vets will simply treat…[Read more]

Hey there, everyone!
Sorry, I don’t know how to reply to individual responses so I hope this is okay haha.
So my local vet suggested that EC might be what’s causing her cataracts. She also said that it could just be genetics, exposure to sunlight, or with no clear reason at all. The blood test to check if she has EC is around $50 AUD, or we can…[Read more]

1/24/21 – Evening, we did another 40 min bathtub session – this time is was MountFEST and there was basically just mounting – regular mount, reverse mount, mounting that almost became bunny tornado before we stopped them with a glove. This time Theo also wanted to mount and they were trying to each become dominant. We pushed them off after a bit…[Read more]

How many vets actually do cataract surgery on rabbits? I’m curious since I don’t think it’s a common surgery. From what I understand, they remove the lens and do not replace it. So the rabbit may not regain its sight. Anyway, it would have to be an exotics vet that specializes in that sort of thing. So I agree with Wick, if you went that route,…[Read more]

Thank you so much! That sounds like a great idea. Makes a lot of sense. I’m usually very gentle with him because I never want to hurt him or make him feel as though I mean harm. However, that makes it harder for me to train him with things like this because I am maybe too gentle haha. But anyway, thank you so much and I will be trying this tomorrow!!

I think there are a variety of things you can do, and it sounds like you intuitively are doing what is standard, which is taking small steps and making sure it is a positive experience. I would say on top of that, to the best of your ability, you want to lessen his exposures to you putting him down due to his flailing. I know that’s hard (I have…[Read more]

I do not have experience with eye-related issues, but I will give my thought that if you have a choice (which doesn’t impact quality of life negatively) to either have a surgery or not, it sounds like the vets you have been working with are not the best fit (with you mentioning they are mainly dog-cat experienced). The House Rabbit Society website…[Read more]

Hi everyone! I need a bit of advice!
First, background story…
Latte is a rescue. I work at a pet store and this lady came in with him, literally in a reusable plastic bag saying that she didn’t have time for him anymore and that she wanted to know what shelter she could take him to. I immediately fell in love with him and decided to take him…[Read more]

Cataracts that develop quickly, particularly at such a young age, suggests something more complicated than a simple “eye problem”. This is actually a symptom of a parasite called E. cuniculi (or “EC”). Most rabbits are exposed to it when they are very young (usually from their mom). For many, there are no outward symptoms because their immune…[Read more]

If the “dirt” is the litter box, then probably not. Just keep his litter box clean and clean the wounded area.
Bam has a point about using ointment. If it makes him not leave the area alone, then I could see it making the irritation worse. I assume the Fucidin is “wetter”, like triple antibiotic ointments are. So switching to something that…[Read more]

Random q: Is that piping used to support/floor the C&C cage? I’d love to see how you navigated that.
I get my hay delivered, so I actually just keep the hay in the box it comes it and take it out each day when I clean the litterboxes. It comes very compressed, so it is as small as I think I could get it without lessening the quantity of hay.…[Read more]

Hi all!
I am looking for a new solution for my hay storage as our current tuberware is just LARGE and my place is very much not large right now. So right now his hay is stored with his pellet bag and bedding bag in a super large green and clear tuberware. I love that its clear because I can keep an eye on how much hay we have, but its too big for…[Read more]

It doesnt have to get infected, so normally I’d just recommend keeping it clean (fore example rinse it with chlorhexidine solution like LBJ suggests, or plain saline (like human eye wash).
If ointment of any kind makes him lick the area more, I’d skip using ointment. Animals do like to lick their wounds, but they can do more damage to the skin if…[Read more]
