I got an email from the shelter and they said Pinky had testicles before he was neutered. They didn’t give me the records but they gave me that info. They also said they don’t do spays because of how invasive it is. But doesn’t it prevent uterine cancer? (I said the same thing in my email to the vet).
Waiting for an email back from my vet to se…[Read more]

The only problem is that I bought the 20 pound bag and feed my chinchilla 2 tablespoons of pellets a day. I’m guessing the bag will last me about a year.

Yeah, it’s kinda funny. Most people from Montana are wire-bottom hutch kind of people (idk why, but that’s what I think of when I think of somebody with a mistreated rabbit) so I’m surprised to find even 3 of the people who don’t think like that on one website, all from the same state.

Thanks to all for the responses this far, this is super helpful and I’m learning a ton. Also made sure to read the responses out loud to my wife at bedtime last night (‘There’s a bunny forum? Cool!’) 🙂 The current ex-pen is 3 ft tall and I have added a lock at the door ever since our friends’ kids came over. We also instituted a ‘no trying to…[Read more]

There could be lots of reasons, it could just be a new behavior, or possibly a nutrient deficiency. What are you feeding? It could also be indicative of a problem with her teeth. Is she eating normally? Have you noticed any drooling?

Hazel replied to the topic Need rabbit advice! in the forum HOUSE RABBIT Q & A 5 years, 8 months ago
It’s totally normal she’s refusing the hay. It’s like having a child that has never eaten a vegetable and suddenly switching their diet to mostly vegetables. They’re not gonna appreciate it. 😆
As the others said, the key is to decrease the pellets. Generally you want to feed 1/4 to 1/2 a cup of pellets per 6lbs of body weight per day. For…[Read more]

Agree with the others. In my opinion, what Dana said is one of the most crucial things to keep in mind:
I do think it’s important to be able to handle your bun safely, but this is more about you learning how to pick up a rabbit safely and carefully, vs training the rabbit to accept it.
Rabbits are prey animals, the only time they would be p…[Read more]

Will a single bag have long lasting health effects? Probably not. I’m not sure what difference it makes if you switch to a new food after you’ve finished the Garden Select. As long as you leave enough to make the transition. The prices between products is pretty similar. Mazuri is only slightly more and the Oxbow Essentials is actually cheaper.

This is a very old thread, so I will lock this now. But feel free to start a new thread to discuss more nail trimming things!

I also use clippers, but recently heard about nail grinder. It is created for dog nail trimming but it is said that works well for rabbits as well. [edited by DanaNM to remove link] maybe someone tried to trim rabbit nails with it?

I agree with Dana and Wick. And I disagree with the breeder. He needs an appropriate-sized enclosure and he should be allowed to exit his enclosure on in own accord (not by being carried somewhere).
Some may disagree with me, but I’m a believer in getting a bunny accustomed to being handled. Do they like it? No. They simply tolerate it. And, as…[Read more]

I would add that rabbits are foragers, so it is wired in them to find “the best” strand of hay. I have found that hay in more locations (rather than a large pile in a single place) triggered both my rabbits to eat more hay. I think it’s because it leans into that foraging instinct of visiting multiple places to find the best food. When you only…[Read more]

First, I think he is a bit young to be getting baby carrots. Romaine lettuce is the “safest” fresh veggie, so that’s fine on occasion, but typically you don’t want to be incorporating a lot of treats (ex. baby carrots) or any fresh veggies into a rabbit’s diet until they are about 6mo, because that ensures their stomach is ready to take it. If…[Read more]

If there was RHDV in your state I would not give her outside time until she is vaccinated, unfortunately. It is spreading rapidly, and the thought is that it will spread faster now that it’s started raining (so insects will return). There is a pinned post that shows up in all the sections with more info about it!

I have to STRONGLY disagree with the breeder.
Most rabbits are ok with being held as young babies, but not all, and usually when they get a bit older they start to dislike it. So it is likely that the baby rabbits your friend has are just OK with it since they are babies still. Even the ones that don’t struggle don’t like it (you can tell by…[Read more]

Hello all,
New to the forum and first time poster. I’ve learned a ton already reading other posts, but thought I’d seek out some opinions to see if I was given bad advice by our breeder. Sorry if it’s a bit of a long post, but I’ll give the whole back story. We brought home a blue eyed white Holland lop male, Coconut, when he was 8 weeks old at…[Read more]
