I remember Molly Varga said Baytril could have some additional effect on ec, in a webbinar I listened to some years ago. Orbax seems to be v similar to Baytril (as you said).
EC symptoms can come and go, esp those that are in the form of seizures or seizure-like. It is currently believed that most of the acute symptoms (or signs) occur when the…[Read more]

I adjusted the panacur to the regular dose. The antibiotic I’m just not sure about, can’t find much about it online. I’ll call them about it on monday.
He was starting to do better before I started the meds though, so maybe he doesn’t need them at all. I’ll give it to him just in case though.

Hi Hazel!
I’m sorry Oscar is unwell.
I too find it weird that hes getting such a high dose Panacur and for only 3 days. That is not the standard treatment for EC.
Most vets would give meloxicam too, since its an anti inflammatory and a lot of the problems ec causes are due to inflammation. As you know corticosteroids are best avoided in…[Read more]

Thanks everyone for the input!
My bad, I meant to write Orbax, not Borax. Orbax is an antibiotic closely related to Baytril.
He has been having issues with falling over/rolling lately. The vet found nothing pointing to a specific cause so he’s treating him for e. Cuniculi and also prescribed the antibiotic in case it’s a bacterial infection of…[Read more]

Thank you, this makes perfect sense and is really helpful. They currently have half the flat each separated by the hallway door so cannot see each other, will keep it that way until she’s spayed. Thanks

Thank you! That’s put my mind at ease a bit, and will keep them completely separate until she is spayed. Have a vets visit on Monday about her sneezing tests and will speak to him about spaying then. Thanks again

I agree that it does seem like a high dose of Panacur. I would definitely talk to your vet and tell them your concern. I remember when Dana had a problem with her vet prescribing the wrong dosage.
As for Borax, I have not heard of this being used for medical purposes. At least not internally and not in rabbits.

Boys tend to bounce back really fast. Sometimes a little too fast. They feel great and want to run and jump. But it’s important to keep him from doing that for the first few days to give the stitches some time to heal. Sometimes this requires confinement, unfortunately.

Incontinence isn’t age-related. Only a secondary symptom of some things that come with age. I agree that 7 isn’t super old for a rabbit. But depending on their size, arthritis can start to creep in around this age. Arthritis can make it difficult for them to get in and out of the litter box.
Although EC can flare up at any age, it seems the risk…[Read more]

I hadn’t mentioned but he does get a lot of grass and hay, again since they are outdoor they have full access to grass and such (I made sure all the plants we own are rabbit safe), I just listed some of his favorite treats. He also has chews which wear his teeth down.
For citrus fruit I wasn’t aware so I will cut that back as he only has started…[Read more]

Un-castrated rabbits do not form stable bonds due to their hormonal fluctuations, so it’s never recommended to try to bond an unspayed or neutered rabbit to another. Their bond was broken after the first fight, but it was likely not a fully formed strong bond to begin with. You need to fully separate them and let them forget the fighting. Do not…[Read more]

I know this isn’t the purpose of your post but your description of his diet is a bit concerning. Does he eat hay? Rabbits’ diet should be about 75-80% grass hay. Fruit only occasionally and citrus really shouldn’t be given. The issues with teeth are usually the back molars which are not possible to see with special tools and anesthesia. If he…[Read more]

You should really try to prevent him running and jumping, at least for the first few days. It is usually necessary to confine them to a pen or crate for the healing time.

Hi Hazel, nice to see you again! What are they treating him for? I’m not familiar at all with Borax suspension.
I used this drug calculator to check his Panacur dosage: https://www.omnicalculator.com/health/dosage and got that he’s getting 44 mg/kg, which does seem high. But then I don’t know what they are treating for? Usually for EC is’t 20…[Read more]

As a general FYI, in the veterinary field, rabbits do categorically fall under the “exotic” pet category, so a rabbit veterinarian should indeed be an exotic vet, as opposed to a standard dog/cat vet.

From what I’ve checked his teeth are fine, hes also very food motivated and actually has been eating foods he used not not like as a young bun (oranges) along with his usual, (pellets, orange leaves, apples, and such)
I’ve been skeptical about arthritis and just age related incontinence. I don’t 100% know if he is actually drinking excessively…[Read more]

Unfortunately, I think this is best discussed with the vet who prescribed it and letting them know transparently you have concerns about the recommended course relative to your past experience. As users here are not qualified vets, it would not be appropriate for us to recommend a certain course over what the veterinarian recommended without you…[Read more]
