So, it’s very important to prevent the fights from happening at all. Even if that means the session is only 1 minute long, or you have your hands on them as soon as they get close together and you just pet them constantly and end it then.

Ignoring each other is better than fighting, and sitting in opposite corners is still a choice to NOT…[Read more]

Haha! Yes we have 4 buns, but as two pairs (Bun Jovi and Myra, and Cooper and Bonnie). They seem very happy separate for now, and with BJ’s age I just didn’t have it in me to push for a quad. Plus they have somewhat different bunny-proofing needs, so having them in different parts of the house is easier in some ways. We finally got their permanent…[Read more]

    Hi all, more updates.

In short, there is some progress, but there are a lot of fights.

They don’t start fighting right away, but they fight in every meeting. I’ve limited the space for interaction to a little bit more than 1m². Dorian (the bigger one) tries to sit in a corner and not to move, while Pi is usually looking at him with both eyes.…[Read more]

Glad to hear things are improving!

I’m not sure about eco-earth safety for digging, but clean organic soil would be OK. Play sand is also safe to use, or just a bunch of shredded paper.

I have used a very light spritz of water as a deterrent or way to distract a bun when they are really obsessed with getting into something (like chewing the…[Read more]

The blood work done seems to be primarily for checking kidney function. She said something about slightly (within normal tolerances) elevated “b”, if I heard her right at the time. Said it might be due to calcium, but normally it’s at a level that would raise alarms. She said everything else appeared normal.

    What is EC?

I have at times removed…[Read more]

Both of my boys do this. I chalk it up to them being gross boys! Bun Jovi will poop a whole pile and then eat them all (at least he’s cleaning up after himself) and Cooper will leave half chewed up poops all over the place!

But I agree, as long as he’s eating lots of hay then it’s not something to worry about.

Sounds like it could be a uti, since it seemed to happen suddenly and randomly. So I agree with having the vet check him out.

Picky bun! Yeah it isn’t the end of the world. I would much rather have a bun that loves hay and not veggies than the other way around!

Some buns really like dried greens and herbs, so you could try that as well.

Other things to try are wild forage, like plantain, sow thistle, willow leaves, etc. Just be sure to collect in an area you know is…[Read more]

Has the vet checked for kidney function or considered EC? EC is often hard to detect in tests but can cause urinary issues. It might be worth treating for once a UTI has been ruled out.

I also agree with ruling out dental pain, which could be done with an oral x-ray.

The only thing I notice about her diet is there are lots of high-calcium…[Read more]

I have buns in my room (and have for about 10 years now), and some nights they can be noisy little buggers, but for the most part it’s fine. I do have a bonded pair and usually in the evening Bun Jovi will run around honking trying to mount Myra, so that’s really the noisiest they get.

I tend to only give them the loudest toys during the day…[Read more]

DanaNM replied to the topic Spay tips in the forum HOUSE RABBIT Q & A 5 years, 5 months ago

It’s great you’re getting prepared! Best thing is to be ready with some pain meds (have the vet give you metacam), and have everything ready to syringe feed her in case she doesn’t want to eat that night. Also having some enticing favorite herbs will help. Some bunnies need to be syringe fed once or twice post-spay, and then usually they start…[Read more]

DanaNM replied to the topic Rabbit smell – HELP! in the forum HOUSE RABBIT Q & A 5 years, 5 months ago

I have noticed that some brands of pee pads don’t seem to do anything for odor and some almost seem to smell worse than no pee pad at all. Since they are designed for dogs, they tend to have a certain stinky smell to them which triggers dogs to mark them.

I wonder if you could experiment with the washable fabric pee-pads, or simply a layer of…[Read more]

    Thanks, sure.

There’s a large litter box in front of a big hay box, she spends a fair amount of time chilling there each day, eating timothy hay. She has access to a chew log a few times per week. The vet has checked her teeth, but possibly not recently,  I wasn’t in the room for a couple visits. But I would think she would. I’m going to start…[Read more]

Can you describe her day to day, including her diet? Does she have a large hay appetite? Excessive water drinking can be a consequence of dental discomfort.

I don’t think it’s unusual for senior rabbits to start peeing in seemingly random places. I know you said he doesn’t seem to be slowing down, but I would suggest having him checked by a vet. It could be arthritis or a urinary problem. If arthritis is the problem, you might try cutting a side out of the litter box so it’s easier for him to get in and out.

It sounds like a classic case of post-neuter craze. I would give him a few weeks before growing concerned about the behavior. As for the skittishness, that is probably hormones too. The hormone fluctuations can heighten senses and the littlest things can spook them.

Poop eating (the regular kind of poop) happens more often than people think it does. I agree with Bam, I wouldn’t be overly concerned. He may grow out of it too.
