Barney and the cats get along pretty well. He loves to play with them and he especially adores my eldest cat Sadie. However, I’m always in the room to supervise just in case the cats get a little too rough and cause Barney unnecessary stress. (my youngest cat has a bad habit of doing this even though he means the rabbit no harm).

There are many positives for all parties for a larger, more permanent space. With “temporary” set-ups, you can’t really invest in making it look good since it’s something that’s put up and taken down daily. If it’s a space that’s more established, you and your mother can work on what she feels comfortable doing and what you would want. If you have…[Read more]

Rabbits have incredible senses compared to us, so at this point it’s probably impossible to hide the rabbits’ presence from each other. Unfortunately, the behavior she is displaying will likely stay as long as that perception of him is here, so if you’re brainstorming actions to try and prevent it, it might be a futile effort. Something you can…[Read more]

It is possible that I could move a few things around down in the basement and make a nice area space for Barney. The basement is the only place in the house without wood. However, I would also need to be able to prevent the cats from getting to him at night when they wouldn’t be supervised. Right now he stays in a cage out in the garage because m…[Read more]

Hey. Thought I’d do a bit of an update. I had intended to do an update earlier, but then the forums went down for about a year and I slowly just forgot about this thread.

I decided to keep Coco, and can’t be more happy that I did. He’s been spoiled rotten, getting plenty of treats and new toys, and spends most of his time in the Cottontail…[Read more]

I know you said you can’t use regular litter but have you tried the paper pellet cat litter unscented? It has baking soda to absorb smells and will also absorb the urine very well.

    Spay/Neuter

Bunny 1: Monkey, female, 8 months old. Spayed 3.5 weeks ago.

Bunny 2: Tokki, male, 3 months old. Getting neutered in a few weeks.

    Housing

Monkey is free roam. She is allowed in all rooms except for the bathrooms and master bedroom when supervised. When we are out, she has free roam of the spare bedroom, where her bed, litter,…[Read more]

I’m wondering if there can be a discussion about slight re-arrangement so maybe you can have a rabbit-proofed place, perhaps sectioned off by an X-pen, draped with a bed sheet on thee outside (so it looks nicer and prevents bar rattling sometimes) in the free-roam space. I know rabbit-proofing doesn’t look great in many circumstances, so would…[Read more]

I echo Dana, in that small spaces has not worked for me. I used the entire x-pen in my bathroom so there was a good amount of space to move around. Forced interaction can make things difficult — they don’t need to interact with each other all the time. As stated, the choice to ignore each other is really good. And learning to ignore and not…[Read more]

Wick has a good point about some veggies being diuretics. Collard greens, kale, and dandelions can act as diuretics as well.

If no symptom improvement has occurred, I would suggest trying a different antibiotic.  I wouldn’t get too hung up on antibiotic resistance — if bacteria could adapt that quickly in every circumstance of treatment, we’d have a much more difficult time treating infections across the board.

Many thanks for all your comments! Cookie is on oral Azithromycin, 1ml/day since March 6 (15 days now) and on Gentamicin nebulization, .5ml/day for 8 days now, (he weighs 3lb) and he still exhibits the same symptoms as before: quick breathing with some crackling sounds suggesting a blockage in his nasal pathways. I don’t see an improvement. Since…[Read more]

I’ll mention that, although we would generally like rabbits to get a variety of veggies for engagement and extra sources of various nutrition, a variety is not actually needed if they have a good hay appetite and the appropriate amount of pellets. If you wanted to trim down to just romaine lettuce/green lettuces to better test the veggie-theory,…[Read more]
