DanaNM replied to the topic baking soda in paper pellet bedding in the forum DIET & CARE 5 years, 4 months ago
Aww that’s too bad. I second the recommendation for pine wood pellets though. They work really well and are safe because they have been heat treated. You can find them sold as horse stall pellets, wood stove pellets, or feline pine (but as feline pine they are 4 times the price). A 40 lb bag of horse stall pellets should be around $8-10 at feed shops.

Thank you all for the advice!!! unfortunately, my bun thinks that the paper pellets were food and tried to eat it 🙁 even if baking soda is okay, I think I want to be safe and just stick to another type of bedding…thank you all again though:D

no she has not. My vet was busy with surgey so another exotic vet took a look. My usual vet still wanted to see him so that is why we are going back tomorrow. I will print out the protocol and bring it with me and hopefully we can figure something out.
Can a abscess be treated with just antibiotics? Or does it need to be cleaned first?

he actually got a single prescortal incision. But even that incisions is actually much lower down. The swelling is located around the abdomen which is why I was so confused as to why it even developed in the first place. I was told his incision site is healing very well. the only think I could think of is when he came home he may have poked…[Read more]

i might be seeing something wrong on the picture, but is the swelling on the abdomen? In neuters there are usually two small incisions, one on each testes. The location of the swelling (unless I’m looking at this totally wrong) looks more like where a spay incision would be… so I’m just a bit confused.
I’m glad you will be seeing the vet…[Read more]

It is a bit difficult to see.
I agree with Dana though, abscesses in rabbits as a rule need to be treated surgically. I think I found the protocol you are referring to, where they describe opening up the abscess and treating it with hydrogen peroxide to make the pus less thick and thus easier to clean out.
Has your vet deemed this abscess…[Read more]

Thank you! I’m very interested in how rabbits perceive the world around them. It’s interesting to read about the way they use their senses, because our human senses are very different. Knowing how a bunny might perceive the world opens new possibilities to connect with them.
Rabbits mostly seem to use sound, touch and scent. Their vision is quite…[Read more]

I’m looking at getting Cinnabun a puppet “surrogate” for Cinnabun that he can use while supervised and I was wondering if you know if it needs to look like George? I found a good one that’s the right size and all, but it’s a lop eared rabbit, not “normal” rabbit ears like George had (not sure what to call non-lop eared rabbits). I’m thinking that…[Read more]

Thanks everyone!
Jerseybunnies – thanks for the ideas! I didn’t want to get him a plush friend because he’s being a bit destructive right now but you’re right that he could at least have it while I supervise. He had a blanket that his brother used in his final days that Cinnabun seemed to love and get a lot of comfort from, but he seems to have…[Read more]

Here is a picture of it. The scab (there is actually more than one just smaller) is covered by the fur but it is pretty much right in the middle and this is kinda bad lighting as it was taken at night but it looks redder and more angry in person.

that is what I was thinking too. I will bring the protocol to my vet tomorrow and speak with her about possible treatment options. She wasn’t able to fit me in due to a packed scedule but still wanted to see him so I will be dropping him off and the doctor can see him when she gets the chance.

Thank you @jerseybunnies ! I was able to find the email last night and she did email me back . Apparently there is a shortage of bicillin, but she said i can use PenG procaine as a substitute and inject everyday.

I posted an update on the domestic vaccine in the pinned RHDV post. There is a company working on one. We don’t know exactly when it will be available, but the hope/expectation is within this year.

Pellets are often the last thing to come back when a bun starts getting its appetite back. Seems they know what’s best for them (hay!). 🙂

DanaNM replied to the topic Early transition from alfalfa to grass hay?? in the forum DIET & CARE 5 years, 4 months ago
I can’t really tell from the picture, but I agree if you have concerns about the safety of the alfalfa, it’s fine to switch to 100% grass. Buns don’t usually have as many issues switching hays as they do with pellets or veggies. As long as he is eating the grass hay well you should be good to go, but of course keep an eye on his poops as Bam…[Read more]

I agree it looks like hiccups! They can be very strong, don’t make a noise, and don’t hurt. 🙂
Your bunny is very cute!
It’s normal to worry a lot about our bunnies, because we love them so much! Once you get a better sense of what is “normal” for your bunny, you will worry less.
