A test to see if there is blood in the urine is to add some hydrogen peroxide to see if it fizzes. Certain veggies can cause the urine to get darker, but not usually with specs in it. I haven’t really noticed strawberry causing this though (usually it’s things like red chard or beet greens).

I don’t want to be alarmist, but at her age and…[Read more]

Cinnamon Bun replied to the topic Eating her liquid cecotropes of the floor? ♥ (I'm worried) ♥ in the forum HOUSE RABBIT Q & A 5 years, 2 months ago

Update: Binkie went in for her vet appointment and they checked for parasites. They took a fecal sample and it was negative. They also did a regular health check just to make sure everything was okay. Other than mushy cecotropes everything looks healthy. It turns out that it was diet related, and the vet said that changing her food would cause her…[Read more]

Thank you guys! Yes, her stomach was a bit gurgly the whole time through this so I think it was really bad gas that could have been stasis.

Overall she seems to be doing well. But this morning I found something really concerning, there was a puddle of pee on my bathroom floor (she never pees outside of her box) and it was a pretty dark orange…[Read more]

Yep, I’ve had my healthy buns do this occasionally too!

Glad he’s eating his veggies again 🙂 He could have been a bit gassy.

*Another explanation for peeing outside of her box is that it’s cleaning day for her box so right now it’s still full and she might be telling me to clean it faster. But will it work if i put a puppy pad underneath the litter, as in will urine’s color show up on it?

It is very difficult to see when they’re very young. Even vets can get it wrong!

Yeah, I never bothered to check.  Took the breeders word for it.

But she will still be Walter.

I’m pretty generous with the pellets.

Since she’s always been on the thin side, I’m thinking if I can’t get some weight on, blood work may be in order.  Wish I had thought to have the vet do it today.  I didn’t think of it til I had her home.

Ok thank you! I’ll keep watching to make sure he can reach down there ok and since it looked perfect I’m going to try not to freak out and just give him a pass on this one since he wasn’t feeling well 🙂

I will also mention that, in my experience, sometimes a healthy rabbit will leave one behind for seemingly no reason. I’ve run into a handful over time with both my rabbits.

    Glad he is doing better!

If it was just a single random cecotrope left behind, I wouldn’t worry too much about it (esp if he ate it once you offered it). If it starts to be a more regular occurrence it could be that he’s producing extras, or possibly having trouble getting to them (but he’s a bit young for arthritis).

For syringe feeding, you can grind up pellets into a powder and mix with water to be about the consistency of pancake batter. There are also recovery foods you can get that are easier to use as they are finely milled and formulated for sick buns.

DanaNM replied to the topic Risk of Disease When Taken Outside? in the forum HABITATS AND TOYS 5 years, 2 months ago

I agree. Until they are vaccinated, I wouldn’t take them outside at all if you are in an outbreak region. There are some links to maps of the outbreak spread in the pinned RHDV post.

Being in the stroller would be a lot less risk than being on the ground outside, but personally I don’t really see any benefit to it (in most cases, the stroller is…[Read more]

DanaNM replied to the topic Barbering Issues in boned pair in the forum BONDING 5 years, 2 months ago

So, if they have only been living together 24/7 for two weeks, I would consider that to be their “fully bonded” date. Being separated repeatedly can cause buns to have to somewhat reestablish things when they get back together.

Since this is a very new bond (even if you go of the 1.5 month timeline), I would just keep monitoring things. As long…[Read more]

How big of a pellet ration does she get? Usually a small increase in pellets is enough.

DanaNM replied to the topic Female desexing – I’m terrified in the forum HOUSE RABBIT Q & A 5 years, 2 months ago

Don’t worry if she spits half of it out! That’s very normal. Honestly sometimes it seems like getting half in is a victory.

Just try to get a something in her and she will slowly start to perk up. Sometimes using smaller syringes helps them swallow more, because you put less in their mouth at a time. Feeding every hour seems excessive and…[Read more]
